Panova Reaches Finals Of Pac-10 Indoors For Second Straight Year
SEATTLE, Wash. ? Despite being questionable for the weekend due to injury, No. 2 seed Daria Panova once again proved why she was named 2003 Pac-10 Player of the Year. The Moscow native disposed of Dea Sumantri (UW), 7-5, 6-1 to advance to her third straight Pac-10 championship and second straight Pac-10 indoor championship.
"Daria is a warrior for us," said head Coach Nils Schyllander. "She is as tough as nails and always rises to the occasion."
The junior will face off against Daniella Bercek of UCLA on Sunday, who upset No. 1 seed and No. 2 nationally ranked Raquel Kop-Jones (Cal), 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
Flight IV featured two Duck players; senior Davina Mendiburu and junior Ester Bak. Mendiburu, after defeating Nina Yaftali of USC by default, went on to win her semifinal match-up against Cal’s Jessica Shu 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Ester Bak beat Nelly Dvornicka (WSU), 6-3, 7-3 (3) in her quarterfinal match, but was defeated in the semifinals by Monica Wiesener of Cal, 6-1, 7-6 (0).
Mendiburu will play in the Flight IV finals tomorrow against Monica Wiesener of Cal.
Courtney Nagle dropped her Flight II semifinal match against Lorena Arias (WSU) 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.
The Flight III consolation bracket featured both Jamie Marshall and Monica Hoz de Vila. Marshall won by default against Kara Guzman (Stan.) in the quarterfinals before bowing out against teammate Hoz de Vila by default. Hoz de Vila then defeated Debbie Larocque of Arizona 6-4, 7-6 (1).
Hoz de Vila will face off against Chris Martinez of Washington State tomorrow for the Flight III consolation championship.
In Flight I doubles play, Panova and Nagle were defeated by Gordon and McGoodwin of UCLA by default.
