Transfer Comes Up Big In First Tournament As A Duck

CORVALLIS, Ore. ?It hasn’t taken Markus Schiller long to make the Oregon men’s tennis coaching staff pleased. After transferring from Auburn University and arriving on campus two weeks ago, Schiller made his impact felt by winning the Corvallis John and Phil’s Tournament at the Timber Hills Racket Club.
"I am very pleased with Markus," said head Coach Chris Russell. "It was really a big time win. He is really going to help us out."
Schiller defeated Chad Wilson (Eugene, Ore.), 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals then defeated Oren Montevassel (Bell Canyon, Calif.) 6-3, 6-4 to claim the championship.
In other singles action, sophomore Arron Spencer was defeated by Montevassel 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals.
Late Saturday night, the doubles team of Roman Borvanov (Vancouver, Wash.) and Colby Jager (Corvallis, Ore.) defeated freshman Eric Pickard and sophomore Arron Spencer 6-4, 6-3 in the doubles semifinals.
Also defeated in the doubles semifinals was Chris King and Markus Schiller, who lost to Wayne Pickard (Portland, Ore.) and Brian Joelson (Beaverton, Ore.) 6-3, 6-2.
The Ducks continue action Jan. 25, when the play host to Santa Clara at noon.
