Women Open Up At Home Against Sacramento State This Weekend

WHAT'S UP: Reigning Pac-10 Player of the Year Daria Panova won the Pac-10 Indoor Championships Flight I singles title for the second consecutive year in Seattle, Wash. The win gave Panova her third consecutive Pac-10 singles title. Senior Davina Mendiburu and freshman Monica Hoz de Vila (consolation champ) also won their respected flights single titles. The team posted a 14-6 singles record. The team plays host to both Sacramento State (10 a.m.) and Nevada (6 p.m.) this weekend.
COACH NILS SCHYLLANDER SAYS: "We are extremely excited to start our dual season. We are coming of a great weekend at the Pac-10 indoor championships claiming two of the four singles titles. At this point our main focus is to get healthy and be as prepared as we possibly can be for Sacramento State. Sacramento State is a program on the rise with some very talented players on their roster. They have been to two consecutive NCAA tournaments and definitely will pose a difficult challenge for us."
SCOUTING SACRAMENTO STATE: Sophomore Margarita Karnaukhova and freshman Anna Erikson are ranked amongst the top 60 college tennis players in the country. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings placed Karnaukhova at No. 45 and Erikson at No. 53. The team was ranked 55th in the ITA Div I national preseason poll. The No. 55 ranking is the highest national ranking in the history of the women’s tennis program.
