Men Open Up At Home Against Santa Clara This Weekend

WHAT'S UP: The Ducks open up their dual match season at home, Sun., Jan. 25 against Santa Clara. Last week was very productive for the Ducks, posting a 17-6 singles and 4-2 doubles record. The productivity was highlighted by transfer Markus Schiller, who despite just arriving on campus, won the Corvallis John and Phil’s Tournament last weekend. Sophomore Arron Spencer reached the semifinals. Sophomore Thomas Bieri and junior Sven Swinnen both went 1-1 at the USTA Futures in Kissimme, Fla. against some of the best players in the world.
COACH RUSSELL SAYS: (On the play of transfer Markus Schiller) "A very pleasant surprise. He (Markus) showed a very impressive level in beating those three guys, who we have had difficulty getting ahead of in the past.
SCOUTING REPORT FOR SANTA CLARA: The Santa Clara Broncos are led by three returning All-West Coast Conference seniors - Erich Chen, Gernot Fischer, and Rick Ruso. Fischer currently holds a 13-3 overall record and a 2-0 record and the No. 1 dual position. The Broncos are 2-0 this season and travel to play the No. 11 Washington Huskies (Jan. 23) before coming to Eugene.
