UO Men?s Golf Opens Spring Season in Tucson

EUGENE, Ore. ? The Oregon men’s golf team will open the spring season at the Ping Arizona Intercollegiate Monday through Tuesday in Tucson, Ariz. Teams will play 36 holes on Monday and a final 18 Tuesday at the par-71, 6,793-yard Arizona National Country Club.
Oregon will compete senior Mike Sica, sophomores Gregg LaVoie and Justin St. Clair (Thurston High) and freshmen Matt Ma and Dustin Pewarchuk.
"We got in six rounds of practice in some really tough weather conditions last week," said Oregon coach Steve Nosler. "We really played well for the conditions and if we continue playing like that in Arizona, we’ll be O.K. It’s not a make-or-break tournament by any means, but you always like to open the spring on a positive note."
The 15-team field features five top 25 teams -- No. 8 Arizona State, No. 11 California, No. 16 Wake Forest, No. 24 Pepperdine and No. 25 New Mexico -- as well as the nation’s No. 1-ranked individual, Bill Hass of Wake Forest. The remainder of the teams in the field include host and defending champion Arizona, UC Irvine, Colorado, Fresno State, Long Beach State, New Mexico State, Oregon, USC, Texas-El Paso and Tulsa.
The Ducks finished 14th at last year’s Ping Arizona, shooting 866 and finishing 37 strokes back of the Wildcats.
