Six Duck Men Score NCAA Marks in Mtn Pac Champs Second Day

SEATTLE ? In second day action in the Mountain Pacific Championships, Gabriel LeMay, Eric Mitchum, Tommy Skipper and Leonidas Watson led the Oregon track and field teams with NCAA provisional marks at the University of Washington’s Dempsey Indoor.
Senior Gabriel LeMay won the two-day, seven-event men’s heptathlon and missed the NCAA automatic standard by 57 points with his score of 5,443 points - one of three Ducks with redshirt sophomores Andy Young (third, 5,385) and Ryan Voge (eighth, 5,194) that easily met the NCAA provisional standard of 5,100 points. The Yoncalla, Ore., native LeMay’s score will likely rank him top 20 nationally next week with 10 collegians already above the 5,500 automatic standard and another provisional qualifier ahead of LeMay’s mark. LeMay edged California’s Jonas Hallgrimsson (second, 5,437) for top honors Friday, ahead of Young (third, 5,385) and first-day leader Chris Staton of UCLA (fourth, 5,362).
Duck freshman and national pole vault leader Tommy Skipper cleared the third-highest mark of his career and his second 18-foot bar in three weeks with Friday’s winning mark (18-1 3/4, 5.53m), and edged Arizona?s Chris Chappell (second, 17-9 3/4) and UCLA’s Yoo Kim (third 17-5 3/4). Senior Trevor Woods followed with an indoor season best (fifth, 17-0), and sophomore Jon Derby (seventh, 16-6) and freshman David Moore (eighth, 16-6) scored indoor personal bests and met the Pac-10 Championships qualifying standard (16-4 3/4) for the first time in 2004.
In the long jump, redshirt junior Leonidas Watson (third, 25-6 1/4) nudged up the NCAA provisional list with a 3/4-inch personal best that was only three inches away from the NCAA automatic mark (25-9 1/4). Washington State’s Matt Mason won the event (26-6 1/4) ahead of UCLA’s Juane Armon (second, 25-10).
In other field event action, sophomore Teddy Davis turned in a one-inch season best in the high jump (fifth, 6-9 3/4) and tied sophomore teammate Jeff Lindsey. Freshmen Bobby Owen (ninth, 6-8) and Joseph Reiter (10th, 6-6) also finished top 10 with marks less than an inch under their season bests of 6-8 3/4 and 6-6 3/4, respectively.
The Ducks’ other NCAA provisional mark came from sophomore Eric Mitchum who ranked third in the 60 hurdle prelims (7.93), only .08 seconds shy of his school record-tying season best from last meet. UCLA’s Anthony Golston and WSU’s Matt Mason led the field with times of 7.86.
Senior Brandon Holliday paced the Ducks in the 400 and claimed the last invite for Saturday’s final (eighth-prelim, 48.33) and junior Scott Lamb missed a similar nod by one spot with an indoor personal best (ninth, 48.55). Other Duck entries in the event prelim include AK Ikwuakor (14th, 48.69) and freshman Jeff DeWolf (22nd, 49.38) who added indoor bests.
Other Duck men’s results Friday included senior James March (shot put, 11th, 53-7 3/4) and freshman Caleb Rexius (60, 18th, 7.11-prelim).
On the women’s side, redshirt senior Amanda Brown posted a 9 1/2-inch indoor long jump best (third, 19-10 1/4) that also bettered her outdoor best of 19-4 1/4. Brown joined the Oregon all-time top-10 list for the first time and tied eighth placer Laurel Roberts, and leaped ahead of Lexie Beck (ninth, 19-9 1/2) and Phillis McKinney (10th, 19-7 3/4). The Eugene native Brown already stood fourth on the all-time triple jump list with her outdoor wind-legal best of 40-9 1/2 from the 2003 West Regional meet.
The sprints featured indoor bests in the 400 prelim from junior Michelle Donovan (ninth, 57.53) and senior C’Rel McAllister (13th, 58.54), and junior Kayla Mellott (12th, 58.31) was only .09 seconds shy of her indoor best.
In distance action, redshirt sophomore Sara Schaaf clocked nearly a second indoor best in the 800 (seventh, 2:12.03) to advanced to Saturday’s final. Redshirt junior Laura Harmon ran a one-second personal best in the 3,000 (ninth, 9:49.85) and missed scoring by less than two seconds.
Other women’s entries Friday included redshirt sophomore Elisa Crumley (60, 20th-p, 8.23), redshirt junior Taylor Bryant (mile, 20th, 5:22.62), senior Rachel Kriz (high jump, 10th, 5-3 3/4), and a quartet of weight throwers - seniors Mary Etter (ninth, 55-1 1/2) and Jill Hoxmeier (11th, 53-8 1/2), sophomore Whitney Gum (16th, 50-6 1/4) and redshirt junior Katie Kersh (17th, 49-1 1/2).
Looking ahead, the rest of the Duck men’s and women’s squads return for third and final-day action Saturday in Seattle in the quasi-indoor conference showdown. Oregon will take on teams from the Big West, Pacific-10 and West Coast Conferences, and the fields include entries from Arizona, California, CS Northridge, Cal Poly (W only), Idaho (M only), Long Beach State, Stanford, UC Irvine (W only), UCLA, Utah State, Washington and Washington State.
