Women's Tennis Comes Through Once Again
EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 41 Oregon (6-0, 0-0) women’s tennis team defeated the No. 40 Minnesota Golden Gophers, 6-1, at the Student Tennis Center.
Davina Mendiburu and Ester Bak ran their doubles dual record to 5-0 on the season after taking down Shelby Rohrer and Jenna Tellefsen, 8-5. Freshman Dominkia Dieskova and sophomore Anna Leksinska won the deciding match, 8-5, against Ida Malmberg and Lindsay Risebrough. The win gave Oregon their second doubles win, and the doubles point. Daria Panova and Courtney Nagle came up short against Angela Buergis and Nischela Reddy, 8-5. Oregon is now 16-2 in dual match doubles play.
"They pushed us in doubles," said assistant coach Kathy Sell. "That is exactly what we needed in order to better prepare ourselves for the upcoming Pac-10 season."
In singles play, No. 8 ranked Daria Panova took care of Angela Buergis, 6-3, 7-5. Panova is now 18-4 on the season and 4-0 in dual matches. The junior has won her last eight singles matches this spring.
Dominkia Dieskova suffered her first dual match loss of the year, losing to Ida Malmberg, 7-5, 6-4. Courtney Nagle defeated Ida Malmberg, 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 3 position. Nagle is now 4-0 in dual matches this year.
Davina Mendiburu continues to be a catalyst for the Ducks squad. The senior defeated Lindsay Risebrough, 6-2, 1-6, 1-0, to earn her team leading sixth dual win of the season. Mendiburu is now a remarkable 9-0 this season.
Position No. 5 and 6 were dominated by the Ducks, as Jamie Marshall and Ester Bak both won easily, 6-0, 6-0. Bak runs her dual record to 5-0 and 9-2 overall.
"The girls are expecting to win," said head coach Nils Schyllander. "The team believes they should win every time out."
The Ducks open up Pac-10 play Feb. 12, when they play host to the Arizona State Sun Devils. The match begins at 6:30 p.m. PST.
