Men's Tennis Edged Out By Yellow Jackets
EUGENE, Ore. - They say it is a "game of inches" and there was no other place that was more evident than Friday night at the Student Tennis Center. The Oregon men’s tennis team (7-3, 0-0) came up short, 5-2, against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, losing four singles sets to tiebreaker.
In singles, junior Manuel Kost fell victim for the first time this dual season, losing to Medford, Ore. native Scott Schnugg, 7-6, 7-5, at the No. 1 spot. At the No. 2 position, Oregon’s No. 92-ranked Sven Swinnen continued to be a model of consistency, taking down Tech’s Jason Pieters, 6-4, 6-2. The win gave Swinnen a team-leading ninth dual win.
At the No. 3 position, Thomas Bieri could not contain Tech’s West Nott, losing, 6-3, 7-5, to decide the overall match. Bieri falls to 5-5 in duals on the season.
Position No. 4 saw Tech’s Zachary Rath take down sophomore Markus Schiller, 6-4, 6-2. Eugene native, Arron Spencer provided the crowd with a spectacular come-from-behind win against Joao Menano, 6-7, 6-1, 6-1. The win gives the sophomore 12 on the year.
Back from injury, senior Chris King came up short against Marko Rajevac, 7-6, 6-3, at the No. 6 position.
In doubles, the Ducks struggled to find their groove, losing two of three matches. At the No. 1 position, Thomas Bieri and Manuel Kost were defeated by Marko Rajevac and Scott Schnugg, 8-5. The loss drops the duo to 7-3 in dual matches. Chris King and Markus Schiller were taken down at the No. 3 spot by Georgia Tech’s Zach Rath and Jason Pieters, 8-4.
The lone bright spot for Oregon was Arron Spencer and Sven Swinnen, who kept their undefeated streak alive (10-0 dual) by defeating the Yellow Jacket’s West Nott and Joao Menano, 8-6.
The Ducks continue action on Sunday when they play host to the No. 27-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers at 11 a.m. at the Student Tennis Center.
