Andrus Jumps to #8 All-time for Ducks in 10K
WALNUT, Calif. - Redshirt senior Ryan Andrus opened action Friday in the 46th Mt. SAC Relays with a 14-second improvement in the 10,000 meters in first day action at Mt. San Antonio College.
The Orem, Utah native finished 10th overall and sixth among collegians (28:56.67) in the third 10K of his career and first this season, and he also easily met the NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 29:00.00.
Friday's race moved him to eighth all-time for the Ducks, ahead of Terrence Mahon (ninth, 28:5.79, 1989), Greg Erwin (10th, 28:57.79, 1981) and Brad Hudson (11th, 28:58.51).
Andrus entered Friday with a previous best of 29:11.04 from the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, Calif., when he finished 12th - and was one place and one second away from the final All-America honor. He made his event debut last March in the Stanford Invitational (14th, 29:12.02).
He has been decorated with All-America honors on the track indoors in 2004 in mid-March (5,000, seventh, 14:03.21) after he ran a 15-second personal best the first weekend in March in Seattle (13:51.00). In cross country, he received similar honors in 2002 for his 34th-place NCAA cross country finish.
In other distance action Friday, former Duck Nick Rogers took 22nd in his 5,000 season debut (13:56.59).
