Ducks Struggle Against No. 21 Wildcats

EUGENE, Ore. ? The Oregon men’s tennis team (8-7, 0-3) could not handle the bottom-half of the No. 21-ranked Arizona Wildcat (12-6, 1-2) lineup, losing the No. 3 through No. 6 positions in singles play. As a result, Oregon was defeated, 5-2.
In doubles, Sven Swinnen and Arron Spencer racked up their team-leading 14th overall victory, defeating Arizona’s Roger Matalonga and Colin O’Grady, 8-6. The win pushed Swinnen and Spencer into a tie for 10th all-time for single-season doubles wins at Oregon.
Manuel Kost and Thomas Bieri could not hold off the UA’s Whi Kim and Dan Andrus at the No. 2 position, losing, 8-5. The loss gave Arizona the doubles point.
In singles, No. 38-ranked Swinnen continued his winning ways, defeated No. 64-ranked Matalonga, 7-5, 6-7, (10-6). The win marked the 54th career victory for Swinnen, moving him into 7th all-time at Oregon.
At the No. 2 position, No. 81-ranked Kost pushed his dual record to 12-3, taking down Kim in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
The remainder of the match was all Arizona, as they posted wins at the next four positions. Bieri, Markus Schiller, Spencer and Vlad Pino were all defeated in straight sets.
"We need to play with a little more purpose," Oregon head coach Chris Russell said. "Sunday proves to be a very important match...a must win."
The Ducks return to Pac-10 play on Sunday (April 4), when they play host to the Arizona State Sun Devils at Noon, at the 15th Avenue Courts.
