Swinnen Reaches No. 17 as Men Head to Pac-10 Championships

WHAT'S UP
Highest Rating - In the recent ITA Tennis Rankings (4/20), junior Sven Swinnen is ranked No. 17 in the country. It is the highest rating for an Oregon player in program history. The jump from No. 35 to No. 17 was a result of the Switzerland native recently defeating UCLA’s No. 6-ranked Tobias Clemens and USC’s No. 23-ranked Adriano Biasella. Swinnen is 16-3 in duals and 22-7 overall on the season.
Pac-10 Tournament Appearances - Swinnen (16-3 duals), Manuel Kost (13-5), Thomas Bieri (7-11) and Markus Schiller (6-13) all earned invites to the Pac-10 singles tournament. Swinnen and Arron Spencer and Kost and Schiller will play doubles. Chris King, Vlad Pino, Eric Pickard and Arron Spencer all earned invites to the Pac-10 singles invitational tournament.
Hard Work Pays Off - After posting a 15-4 dual record and two recent wins against top 25 doubles teams, Swinnen and Arron Spencer were rewarded an ITA national ranking of No. 38.
LAST WEEK
#19 Washington - The Huskies defeated the Ducks, 6-1, to finish out the Pac-10 dual deason. Oregon won two of three doubles matches to clinch the point with No. 38 Sven Swinnen and Arron Spencer defeating UW’s No. 20 team of Daniel Chu and Alex Vlaski. The win marked the third time the duo has defeated a ranked doubles team this season.
MEN'S PAC-10 TOURNAMENT INFORMATION
Pac-10 Conference Championships - The Pac-10’s eight men’s teams head to Ojai, Calif., Thurs., April 22 through Sun., April 25, to decide the league’s singles and doubles champions. The 32-player men’s singles draw shall consist of four student-athletes from each school, and the 16-team doubles draw shall consist of two doubles teams from each school.
What & Where - Pac-10 competition will be held in conjunction with the 104th Annual Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament. The Pac-10 men will compete at Libbey Park in Ojai for all rounds. Semifinal and final matches on Sat., April 24, and Sun., April 25, are at Libbey Park. Matches begin at 8 a.m., with two rounds of singles on opening day. One round of singles and two rounds of doubles will be played on Friday. Semifinals and finals will be held at a time yet to be determined.
Ojai History - The Ojai, as it is known in tennis circles, is the oldest amateur tennis tournament in the United States and has been interrupted only five years since its inception - in 1924 by hoof and mouth disease and four years during World War II. Pac-10 schools have competed in intercollegiate events in 92 of The Ojai’s 102 tournaments beginning in 1911. Championship medals are awarded in both singles and doubles and the winner’s names are inscribed on permanent trophies displayed each year at the tournament. Last year’s singles winner was UCLA’s Marcin Matkowski. Doubles winner was USC’s Parker Collins and Daniel Langre.
