Kost Advances to Pac-10 Quarters

OJAI, Calif. ? The Oregon men’s tennis team got a huge performance from junior Manuel Kost. The Switzerland native won his first two singles matches and will advance to the Pacific-10 Conference championship quarterfinals on Friday.
No. 71 Kost defeated Arizona’s Whi Kim, 6-4, 6-3, in the first round. In the second round, Kost needed three sets to defeat UCLA’s No. 68 Luben Pampoulov, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. Kosts’ quarterfinal opponent will be USC’s No. 31 Adriano Biasella.
No. 17 Sven Swinnen suffered a heartbreaking first round defeat to Arizona’s Colin O’Grady, losing, 7-6, 6-7, 7-6. Swinnen, however, looks to be in position to receive a bid to the NCAA Championship, May 15-24, in Tulsa, Okla.
Thomas Bieri and Markus Schiller both lost in straight sets in the first round of the championship tourney.
In the invitational draw, Eric Pickard, Vlad Pino and Chris King were all defeated in straight sets. Sophomore Arron Spencer advanced with two, three-set victories over Nathan Cochrane of Arizona and Jason Nguyen of UCLA. Spencer will advance to the quarterfinals tomorrow (Fri.) against Stanford’s Carter Morris.
Up next, Kost and Spencer will play for a chance to advance to their respective draws semifinals, while four doubles teams will compete in the championship or invitational tournaments.
