Ducks Advance Doubles Team, Kost Falls in Quarters

OJAI, Calif. ? The Oregon men’s tennis team was led by the doubles team of junior Thomas Bieri and senior Chris King, who advanced to the semifinals of the Pacific-10 Conference invitational draw. Junior Manuel Kost was finally defeated, losing in the quarterfinals of the championship bracket.
No. 71 Kost failed to advance to the semifinals after losing, 6-3, 6-4, to No. 31 Adriano Biasella of USC. With the loss, Kost drops to 18-10 on the season.
Sophomore Arron Spencer was defeated in the quarterfinals of the invitational draw by Stanford’s Carter Morris, 6-0, 6-3.
In championship doubles, both teams for Oregon were defeated in the first round. No. 38 Sven Swinnen and Spencer lost to K.C. Corkery and James Pade of Stanford, 8-5. The duo falls to 17-7 overall on the season. Kost and Markus Schiller were taken down by Phillipp Gruendler and Luben Pampoulov of UCLA, 9-8.
In invitational doubles Thomas Bieri and Chris King advanced to the semifinals with an 8-4 victory over Jason Nguyen and Aaron Yovan of UCLA and an 8-5 triumph over Chris Biro and Ryan McBride of Arizona State. The duo will face Phil Sheng and James Wan of Stanford in the semifinals, tomorrow (Sat.) at 2 p.m.
The remainder of the Ducks (9-10, 1-6) season will rest in the hands of the NCAA selection committee, who will determine the field of 64 next week.
