Panova Upset in Pac-10 Quarterfinals

OJAI, Calif. ? The Oregon women’s tennis team wrapped up play at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships. Junior Daria Panova was upended in the quarterfinals, ending her quest for a fourth consecutive Pac-10 title.
No. 10 Panova battled hard through three sets but could not hold off Anca Anastasiu of USC, losing, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3. Panova is now 31-12 on the season and 16-5 in tournament matches. With a No. 10 ranking, Panova will receive a bid to participate in the NCAA individual championships, May 20-29, in Athens, Ga.
Sophomore Anna Leksinska lost in the first round of the invitational draw but picked up a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Washington’s Megan Flynn in the bracket back draw.
In championship doubles, both Oregon entries were defeated in the first round. Anna Leksinska and Dominika Dieskova lost to No. 13 Raquel Kops-Jones and Jiuen Jacons of Cal, 8-2. Daria Panova and Courtney Nagle were defeated by Anca Anastasiu and Diane Matias of USC, 8-6.
With a 16-8 overall record, No. 30 Oregon looks poised to receive one of the 64 bids to the NCAA Tournament, beginning May 14, at a regional site to be determined.
