3:30 pm - M 400 - Travis Anderson, UO (#13, 46.94), Aaron Buzard, Minnesota (#23, 47.22). The 400 looms as the what-if event of the day without three of the meet’s fastest (UO’s Matt Scherer and Minnesota’s Adam Steele and Mitch Potter). Scherer climbed to fifth all-time for UO with his 46.40 clocking indoors, but slightly strained his hamstring in the NCAA indoor 4x400 in March and is nearly recovered. Minnesota senior Adam Steele won the NCAA outdoor title last year (44.57) and is a five-time All-American (still look for him in the 200 at 4:10 pm), and fellow Gopher senior Mitch Potter is a nine-time All-American and owns a best of 45.96. 3:45 pm - M Triple Jump - Leonidas Watson, UO (#13), Derek Strubel, UO (#29). As expected, Oregon junior Leonidas Watson has paid immediate dividends after his transfer from St. Louis Community College. The former JC basketball player won national junior college triple jump titles indoors and outdoors last year, and was the long jump runner-up in both meets. As a Duck he took All-America honors indoors in the NCAA finale in March (ninth, 25-2 1/2, and ranked eighth nationally before the meet in the long jump (25-6 1/2) and triple jump (52-10 1/4). Duck freshman Mike McGrath, a Portland native and Lincoln High School product, led prepsters last year with his Oregon state record (1:48.56). Minnesota sophomore Trent Riter ranks fifth all-time for Minnesota outdoors in the 800 (1:48.96) with a clocking that placed fourth in the 2003 Midwest Regional and earned an NCAA invite. Washington senior Todd Arnold also earned an NCAA trip in 2003 after he took fourth in the West Regional (1:50.67) and he owns an outdoor best of 1:50.00..
3:50 pm - W Shot Put - Bree Fuqua, UO (#42, 50-11 1/2). Outdoors, she threw a season best of 50-11 1/2 in the Texas Relays last week. Minnesota junior Alean Frawley leads the field with her outdoor personal best of 53-5 1/2 from 2003, but missed the championship slate because of a back injury.
4 pm - M Pole Vault - Tommy Skipper, UO (#7, 17-8 1/2, 18-8 3/4 indoors), McKane Lee, UW (#36-tie, 16-4 3/4), Trevor Woods (#36-tie, 16-4 3/4), David Moore (#36-tie, 16-4 3/4). The Sandy, Ore., native is one of the state’s most heralded performers in prep history. He won three 4A pole vault state titles for Sandy High School in suburban Portland and broke state meet records all four years. As a senior, he was named Boys Athlete of the Year by Track and Field News, broke the national prep record with his winning height in the Golden West Invite (18-3), and also won his second straight U.S. junior title (18-0). As a Duck in 2004, he ranked first nationally during the season among collegians with his school record of 18-8 3/4, and soared to his second-highest clearance ever in the NCAA Championships (second, 18-4 1/2) behind the returning NCAA indoor champion. Outdoors this year, he has navigated breezy conditions in the Oregon Preview (17-6 1/2) and Texas Relays (17-8 1/2) the past three weeks. Duck senior and two-time All-American Trevor Woods won last year’s competition into a stiff headwind (15-11), while the Coos Bay native’s outdoor best (18-0 1/2) from the Washington Dual at Hayward Field in 2002. Duck redshirt freshman David Moore upped his outdoor best to 16-8 3/4 in 2003 and went 16-6 indoors this year. Washington freshman McKane Lee cleared his personal best of 16-7 outdoors as a prep senior in 2003. 4:15 pm - W 3,000
4:30 pm - M 3,000 - Colorado sophomore Dathan Ritzenhein is the next in line of Colorado’s tradition of Olympic distance hopefuls, and his 3,000 best of 8:01.13 came indoors this year in February. At the national level already this season, he won the national NCAA cross country title in a thrilling kick last fall, then followed with fourth place in the NCAA Indoor Champs in the 5,000 (13:42.09) in March. Another of his most impressive efforts was his 5,000 personal best of 13:27.77 from the Cardinal Invite at Stanford in 2002.
4:55 pm - M 4x400 - Minnesota looks to extract some revenge from the host Ducks as the oft-used Gopher sprinters were edged last year by the Ducks (3:11.87-3:12.63). Two months later, Minnesota rebounded for second in the NCAA finale (3:02.33), only .21 seconds behind LSU (3:02.01). The Ducks also improved (time-wise) in the 2003 NCAA outdoor prelims with a school record 3:06.73. Indoors in 2004, Minnesota logged a season best of 3:04.48 to repeat their runner-up NCAA placing, while Oregon lowered its school best to 3:06.40 in February en route to an NCAA invite of their own.
