Skipper Skies to Pole Vault Win and Outdoor PR in Pac-10 Champs First Day

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Oregon men’s and women’s track and field opened action in the Pacific-10 Conference Championships Friday with one win, and two more runner-up finishes at Roy Drachman Stadium.
In the team races, the Duck men lead as expected after seven events with 67 points, although meet favorite UCLA had a strong first day and looms in second with 49 points, just ahead of ASU (third, 40) and Arizona (fourth, 38). The Duck women stand in seventh place after eight events with 22 points, while ASU leads with 56 points, ahead of Stanford (second, 55), USC (third, 48) and meet favorite UCLA (fourth, 39 1/2). Individually for the Duck women, redshirt junior Sarah Malone matched her pre-meet seed and claimed her third Pac-10 runner-up finish in the javelin (171-5) behind USC’s four-time champion Inge Stasliounyte (181-11). Malone threw her daily best on her first throw and led the opening two rounds, before Stasliounyte took the lead on her third try 177-4 (54.06m), then improved on her sixth throw to 184-11. Malone’s other legal marks came on her second (164-7, 50.16m) and fourth attempts (164-0, 49.99m), and her daily best was her second-best in league competition, just behind her 171-9 heave as a sophomore in 2002, and ahead of her frosh mark of 167-1 from 2002. "I was hoping to win it, but you have to give credit to Inge because she's a great competitor, and you have to have your best day to beat her," Malone said. "She also throws really well when there's no wind like tonight, while I love headwinds. I didn't feel extremely fast on the runway, and I wasn't totally in sync with my technical positions at key points of the run-up and delivery. I'll go back to the drawing board and be ready to give it another go at regionals." In the sprints, junior Sofie Abildtrup did double duty in the 200 and 400 prelims in her first league appearance. She advanced with the third fastest time in the 400 (52.92) - 1 1/2 seconds better than her prior season best of 54.49, and also better than her pre-Duck all-time best of 54.16. In the her follow-up effort in the 200 , she ranked 11th overall (24.09) and fourth in her heat - only .18 seconds off her season and personal best. Overall in the two events, Monique Henderson of UCLA led the 200 (23.05) by .40 seconds, and the 400 by more than 1 1/2 seconds (52.02). In the 400 hurdles prelims, the Ducks’ deepest event featured all four entrants in the top 14 overall with two advancing to Saturday’s final. Senior Abby Andrus ran her second-fastest time of the season (fourth overall, second in second heat, 60.37), and junior Kayla Mellott followed in sixth place overall and third in the same heat (60.72) in a .58-second personal best that moved her ahead of former Duck Tamara Schurch into seventh all-time for the Ducks. Freshman Amanda Santana challenged for her second-fastest time every (12th, 62.46), and C’Rel McAllister ran a half-second personal best in her final individual race as a Duck (14th, 62.58).
Redshirt sophomore Sara Schaaf claimed the last time qualifier in the 800 prelims (2:10.88) and ranked third in her heat only .03 seconds ahead of the first person not to advance (Washington’s Kira Harrison, 10th, 2:10.91). UCLA’S Ashley Caldwell led the prelims by almost three seconds with her 2;07.65 clocking. In the 1,500 prelims, redshirt junior Taylor Bryant clocked her second-fastest time ever and missed the final by one place and .76 seconds in her Pac-10 debut (13th, 4:40.91). Redshirt junior Rachael Kriz scored for the second time in Pac-10 duty in the high jump and ended in a three-way tie for fifth (5-6) with her second-highest mark of the season. She missed her three attempts at matching her season and personal best (5-8) which she cleared in the Pepsi Team Invite. ASU’s freshman heptathlon champion added her second title in the event (5-9 3/4). The Toledo, Ore., native also competed an hour earlier in the afternoon in the javelin (13th, 136-0), and was within three feet of her season best (139-6) for the fourth time this outdoor season. Redshirt junior Bree Fuqua improved two places on her pre-meet seeding in the shot put and took fourth with a quarter-inch personal best (52-5 1/2). The first-year Duck still ranks second all-time for the Ducks behind school record holder Quenna Beasley (53-1 1/2).
In the hammer, junior Katie Kersh led a trio of Ducks (161-10), and was followed by fellow debuts by sophomores Megan Kriz (14th, 146-3) and Whitney Gum (15th, 136-1). The Event was won by UCLA’s Jessica Cosby (208-9). In non-Duck events, UCLA’s Sani Roseby won led the 100 hurdles prelims (12.97), USC’s Virginia Powell paced the 100 prelims (11.37, w:0.0), ASU’s Amy Hastings notched the Sun Devils’ third straight win in the steeplechase (10:21.74), UCLA’s Michelle Sanford won the long jump (20-7 3/4, w:0.0), On the men's side, freshman Tommy Skipper continued to add to his case for athlete of the meet honors with another inspiring effort in the pole vault. Faced with double duty simultaneously in the pole vault and javelin, he opened duty in the pole vault when he cleared 17-3 1/2 on his first try (after he passed at the opening bars of 15-11 3/4, 16-5 1/2, and 16-11 1/2). He then ran 40 meters across the infield and took two throws in the javelin - (208-9, 63.64m) on his first, and a daily best of 215-2 on his second. He ranked second in the javelin at that point, and content that he would contribute multiple points to the Duck cause, he then went back to focus solely on the pole vault. "I didn't know what to expect in the javelin," Skipper said, "and I tried to get a solid huck in there early so I wouldn't have to take all my attempts in the jav and focus solely on the pole vault. In both events, I wasn't trying to over-scrutinize anything. I'm a 'fly by the seat of my pants' kind of guy so I was more focused on just competing than the heights, distances, etc. If you can't focus on the competition part, you can lose track of what's really important." Going into the pole vault Skipper ranked first in the event thanks to his indoor best and school record of 18-8 3/4, but UCLA’s Yoo Kim ranked higher on the national outdoor list, and gave Skipper a scare at the next height when Skipper need two attempts at 17-7 1/4, and Kim moved into the lead by virtue of a first attempt clearance. At the next height, Skipper re-assumed the lead with a first-attempt make at his outdoor season best of 17-11 1/4 (5.47m). Kim missed his first attempt at that height, then passed his next two tries for two more attempts at the next height - 18-3 1/4. Skipper again rose to the occasion with another season best on his first attempt, and Kim missed his final two tries. The first-year Duck then went up to 18-10 14 (5.75m) and missed his three attempts with noble but fruitless attempts. Also in the event, two-time All-American and senior Trevor Woods added his fourth top-eight scoring honor (fifth, 16-11 1/2) and redshirt sophomore Andy Young was an inch shy of his personal best (12th, 16-5 1/2). "I wasn't at my best early in the pole vault, but once I got in the flow, things started feeling a lot better," Skipper said. "I tried to focus on giving it my 110 percent, and let he points be what they may. Having Andy and Trevor out there doing well and cheering you on was also really special, and the crowd added an extra energy. I also have to give special credit to the trainers - Julie, Tyler and Matt - who did everything they could make it possible for me to give it my best." Meanwhile, back in the javelin, senior and returning Pac-10 champion Adam Jenkins wrote one of the greater comebacks of the meet. The Gladstone, Ore., native opened with a throw of 206-3 (62.88m) and a foul to rank sixth after his opening attempts, then had a 222-0 (67.68m) third attempt to move up to third at the halfway point after the preliminary three rounds. In the final, he made a charge at leader Matt Wagner of Arizona who threw his daily best of 233-4 on his first throw of the evening, and had owned a season best past +240 feet from earlier in the year. Jenkins improved to 227-4 (69.30m) on his fourth attempt to draw within six feet, and his last two throws (227-0, 69.18m and 212-6, 64.79m) were again solid but not improvements. "I had a bad first two attempts, so Lance (Deal, throws coach) and I agreed to use a half approach on the third throw to make it simpler and that worked really well," Jenkins said. "That got my spirits back up and back in the competitive mental framework. From there as I got closer to Wagner, that gave me more confidence, and I started thinking I had a chance to get him." Jenkins's second-place finish was three spots higher this his pre-meet ranking based on his season best of 218-0 from the Pepsi Team Invitational a month before (4/10) at home. Friday's best also moved him up from eighth to third all-time for the Ducks just past 2002 NCAA champ Nick Bakke (227-3), and behind a pair of NCAA champs - John Stiegeler (252-10, first, 2001) and Art Skipper (second, 225-10, 1991) who was Tommy's older brother.
In the 400 prelims, sophomore Matt Scherer ran a .82-second season best and .13-second personal best (fifth, 46.20), in an event that was led by the ASU duo of Jason Barton (first, 45.49) and Lewis Banda (second, 45.93). Scherer’s previous season was 47.09 from the Oregon Twilight and his personal best of 46.40 came indoors in February in the Iowa State Classic. Junior Kedar Inico boosted the Duck sprint corps with a sixth-place effort in the 200 prelims (21.17) that bettered his personal best of 21.47 and his windy best of 21.20 that had come in April for the Ducks. Freshman Ryan Gilliam lowered his season best (11th, 10.61), and was .02 seconds and two places from the final. The football dual-sporter owned a prior windy season best of 10.64 (w:2.9) from the Oregon Invite, and a wind-legal best of 10.70 from the Oregon Twilight two weeks ago. WSU’s Anthony Buchanan led the field (10.30) by .04 seconds. Sophomore Eric Mitchum validated his top-seed status in the 110 hurdle prelims (13.76, w:0.0) and was followed by a pair of Bruins in the prelims - Anthony Golston (second, 14.18, w:0.0) and Jonathan Williams (third, 13.93, w:0.0). Fellow Duck sophomore AK Ikwuakor also advanced and followed in fifth with a .21-second season best (14.16) that was only .02 seconds off his personal best for Colorado last year. Redshirt junior Brett Holts was edged in the steeplechase by one of the surprises of the meet, ASU freshman Aaron Aguayo (first, 8:47.69) who won a tooth and nail sprint over returning champ Ian Dobson of Stanford (second, 8:48.20). The Bend, Ore., product Holts ranked third (8:58.28) and held off Arizona’s Joshua Ludwig on the final straighttaway (fourth, 8:59.47). Duck freshman Kyle Alcorn made his second event appearance and ran virtually the whole race in his final position (9:13.91) and the final five laps solo. Holts’ placing was his third, top-four effort in the event after he took second in 2003 (8:55.0) and fourth as a freshman (9:03.32). In the evening finale, redshirt senior Ryan Andrus posted his second-straight top-six finish in the 10,000 (fourth, 30:30.17) in a tactical race that featured a lead pack of 8-10 runners until the final six laps (and a pack of five still with 800 left). Redshirt senior Jason Hartmann was slowed by a lack of fitness from a hip injury most of the outdoor season but still gutted out a 12th-place finish (31:26.90). Arizona’s Robert Cheseret took the win in the kick (30:24.84) over Stanford’s Chris Emme (second, 30:26.47). Freshman Mike McGrath missed advancing by .08 seconds when he got trapped behind a wall of three other qualifiers for the last 150 meters of his prelim. The Portland native and Lincoln High School product clocked 1:50.69 - .45 seconds off his season best (1:50.24) in the tactical two-section race, and was only a second behind the second-place finisher (Jon Rankin of UCLA, 1:49.64). Stanford’s Justin Romaniuk led the field by .18 seconds (1:49.46). In the long jump final, redshirt junior Leonidas Watson climbed several positions in the late rounds with a daily best of 24-8 1/4 (w:0.0). UCLA's Juaune Armone won by six inches (25-10) over ASU's Trevell Quinley (second, 25-4). In non-Duck events, Arizona’s Robert Cheseret led the 1,500 prelims by almost 1 1/2 seconds (3:48.00), and UCLA’s Dan Ames won the shot put by 1 1/2 feet (65-0). "Before the meet we though if we had hit on all cylinders ni every event we might be in the low to mid 70-point range," Oregon head coach Martin Smith said. "We put ourselves in position to challenge for the title Saturday, but UCLA had a great first day and ASU is on pace to be right there, too. Virtually all of the men and women were right at season-best performances or finish where they were seeded or better, so we have to take it up another level tomorrow." Full meet results and Saturday's final day heat sheets will be posted at the
