Women's Basketball Players Invited to Canadian National Team Training Camp

EUGENE, Ore. ? University of Oregon women’s basketball players Carolyn Ganes and Kaela Chapdelaine have been invited to attend tryouts for the Canadian Senior National Team.
The training camp will run from May 19 to June 8 at Trinity Western University at Langley, British Columbia. Oregon associate head coach Allison McNeill will head up the National Team. Her staff also will include Ducks assistant coach Mike McNeill and University of Saskatchewan coach Lisa Thomaidis.
"I am thrilled Carolyn and Kaela have an opportunity to train with the Canadian National Team this summer," Allison McNeill said. "It is another incredible opportunity for them to learn and grow as basketball players."
It marks the third straight year with McNeill at the helm. She succeeded current Oregon head coach Bev Smith, who served from 1997 to 2001.
"It is an incredible honor to be asked to represent your country ? there is nothing quite like it," McNeill said.
"Because Canada didn’t qualify for the Olympics, this training camp will bring together some of our veteran athletes and some of our developmental athletes. We will get a feel for a group that will make up the team that will go to the World Qualifying Tournament next summer with an eye on the World Championships in 2006 and the Olympics in 2008."
Ganes (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) was on the Senior National Team last year as it participated in the Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic. Ganes averaged 5.8 points and 2.3 rebounds for the Ducks as a sophomore this past season.
Meanwhile, Chapdelaine (Okotoks, Alberta) is the youngest invitee to the camp, with ages ranging from 19 to 29. Chapdelaine, who was on Canada’s Development National Team last summer, redshirted her freshman season at Oregon in 2003-04.
Of the 14 invitees, seven competed at the NCAA Division I level a year ago. Oregon and Utah are the only U.S. programs with more than one invitee.
