Six Duck Tracksters Earn NCAA Invites in West Regional First Day

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The University of Oregon men’s and women’s track and field teams opened action in the NCAA West Regional at Cal State Northridge’s Matador Complex Friday with two women and four men claiming top-five finishes and invites to the NCAA Championships field, set for Austin, Texas, Wed.-Sat., June 9-12.
The Ducks got one NCAA invite in the women’s pole vault and almost added another as freshman Emily Enders won a jump-off for fifth place with senior teammate Kirsten Larwin. Enders and Larwin tied at 13-1 3/4 with makes on their second tries at that height. In the ensuing jump-off, Enders cleared 12-5 1/4, while Larwin missed her three chances at that height.
"I really wanted to make NCAA’s," Enders said, "but the thing what I wanted more was for Kirsten to make it, too. In the jump-off it was hard because I was excited for myself but nervous for her. She’s been so supportive this year, so when I found out about the jump-off, I asked if I could just defer and let her go automatically. But Mark (Vanderville, pole vault coach) told me to focus, and if I cleared it there was a chance we could both qualify."
Enders entered the meet ranked 24th nationally with her personal best of13-2 1/4 last meet in the Pac-10 Championships, while Larwin’s season and personal best of 13-6 1/4 also from the league showdown has a strong chance of still earning an at-large invite. The Eugene native and South High School product ranks 10th nationally in 2004 with her season best, and 5-8 people that did not qualify in a regional Saturday nationwide will be also invited to the NCAA Championships based on their season bests.
"Being in the Pac-10 gets you ready for these types of meets," Enders said. "It’s the best conference in the nation, and I was really close to 13-6 at Pac-10s so I knew I was ready to go coming in and thought I could contend for an invite. It wasn’t my best meet technically, but I got better the higher we went. At the same time, my body was shutting down, so I did my best to refocus on getting in the zone. I think I focused there on putting everything together at that point and finishing my jumps off. Kirsten was invaluable as always. Whenever I have a question I always go to her, and she tells me exactly what I need to do."
In the normal section of the event, Enders cleared 12-4 on her second try, then made a third try at 12-10 and second try at 13-1 3/4, before she missed three attempts at 13-5 3/4. Larwin needed a third-attempt try at her opener (12-4), then made second attempts at 12-10 and 13-1 3/4 to force a tie.
Overall in the event, UCLA’s Chelsea Johnson (13-9 3/4) won over Washington’s Kate Soma (second, 13-5 3/4) and Carly Dockendorf (third, 13-1 1/34) and Arizona’s Connie Jerz (fourth, 13-1 3/4).
In the distances, redshirt junior Laura Harmon passed four runners in a 68-second final lap en route to a third-place finish in the 5,000 and a 13-second personal best (16:33.17), rewriting her former best of 16:46.97 from the Stanford Invite in late March.
Stanford’s Sara Bei won the event (16:12.26) when she reeled in early race leader Laura Turner of BYU (second, 16:24.59), and other automatic qualifiers included Desiree Leek of UC Santa Barbara (fourth, 16:33.74) and ASU’s Desiree Davila (fifth, 16:35.27).
"I knew from my workouts that I could qualify," Harmon said. "After I was nearly tripped in the last few laps, it took me a little while to regain my composure and my rhythm. Once I settled down I knew my foot speed could pull me through. Marnie (Mason, assistant coach) told me to stay focused on just competing, and not let any mind games - like how many laps were left - effect my confidence."
Other Ducks that competed in the finals in the field events included a trio of hammer throwers - sophomores Megan Kriz (11th, 179-5) and Whitney Gum (12th, 167-10) and junior Katie Kersh (31st, 159-9). Kriz almost nailed her fourth 180-foot meet of the season, and her season best of 185-0 came from the Oregon Twilight and ranks her third all-time for the Ducks.
In the discus final, senior Jill Hoxmeier finished 13th (157-0) and junior Bree Fuqua ranked 28th (137-2).
Im preliminary action on the track, junior Sofie Abildtrup ranked 10th in the 400 prelim (54.42) and missed the ninth and final advancing spot for Saturday’s final advancing by .41 seconds. Her time Friday was the fourth of the season under 54.50 after she joined the Ducks with a prior personal best of 54.16 as a first-year transfer from Fredericksberg, Denmark.
In the 800 prelims, redshirt sophomore Sara Schaaf claimed a time-based qualifier (2:07.89) with a nearly quarter-second personal best in a field bested by Nevada’s Kali Baker (2:06.41). Schaaf’s previous best was 2.08.08 from the Stanford Invite as she is now less than a second from Oregon’s all-time 10th- ranked 800 runner (Ellen Schmidt, 2:07.1, 1977).
In the 400 hurdles, junior Kayla Mellott did not advance to the finals (15th, 62.02).
On the men’s side, the Ducks celebrated four top-five finishers and NCAA qualifiers, including three from field events.
In the high jump, sophomores Jeff Lindsey and Teddy Davis tied for third at 7-1 with Lindsey clearing 7-1 for the third time this outdoor season, and Davis upped his personal best by 3/4 inches.
"What a way to make up for indoors ("when I barely missed qualifying for nationals)," Lindsey said. "I was going home to Texas the week after classes, but my family and friends will be stoked to see me a week earlier for nationals."
The Mansfield, Texas native cleared his first attempt at 6-9, then needed third-attempt makes at 6-11 and 7-1 to tie for third. Davis converted his second attempt at his opening two tries (6-9, 6-11), then also sweated out two misses at 7-1 before sailing over the bar on his third try at 7-1.
"My back was bothering me a little coming in," Lindsey said, "so I was a little nervous. I still smoked 6-9, but then cut it close on the next two bars. After Teddy got his second attempt at 6-11, his chances were looking pretty good, so I couldn’t let him go to NCAA’s alone. My attempts at 7-2 1/4 were pretty good - better than everybody else other than Teak (Wilburn, the winner from Cal). Overall, the conditions weren’t bad - it wasn’t hot or cold, and there was a little headwind. The surface wasn’t nearly as fast as Hayward Field, so I had to give it everything I had speed-wise."
The White Salmon, Wash., native Davis had cleared seven feet once before for the Ducks, in his collegiate indoor opener in January 2003 (7-0 1/4). In contrast, Lindsey had cleared 7-1 3/4 outdoors in the Pepsi Meet this April and 7-0 1/2 in the Oregon Invite. Indoors in March, he missed an NCAA invite by a half inch based on his season best of 7-1 1/2.
Cal’s top-seeded Teak Wilburn won the event (7-2 1/4) over USC’s Jesse Williams (second, 7-1) who also needed three tries to make his final height. Long Beach State’s John Temidara locked up the last advancing slot (fifth, 6-11) in the 13-man field.
Junior hammer thrower Paul Etter added another NCAA invite and took the fifth and final event invite (193-0) by three inches over Cal’s Rhuben Williams (sixth, 192-9). The Everett, Wash., native opened with a 185-6 (56.55m), then threw his daily best of 179-11 (54.84m) on his second. He ended the prelims with a throw of 187-3 (57.07m), and in the finals followed with 184-4 (56.18m), 191-3 (58.29m) and 192-2 (58.57m).
UCLA’s Dan Ames won the event (206-5) without taking a throw in the final, and edged Sac State’s Robert Linkul (second, 204-6). Other NCAA qualifiers included Utah State’s Ryan Bruhn (third, 199-5) and USC’s Michael Murray (fourth, 198-5).
On the track, redshirt junior and All-American Eric Logsdon (fifth, 14:13.45) earned a repeat NCAA invite in the 5,000. The Canby, Ore., native was passed at the line in the 5,000 by another hard-charging qualifier, Kyle Goklish of Arizona (fourth, 14:13.26), and other qualifiers included Arizona’s Robert Cheseret (first, 14:09.86), Stanford’s Seth Hejny (second, 14:10.82) and Louis Luchini (third, 14:13.05).
In qualifying action for Saturday’s finals, sophomore AK Ikwuakor ranked second in the 110 hurdles (14.24, w:1.4) behind UCLA’s Anthony Golston (first, 13.87), and Oregon sophomore All-American Eric Mitchum also advanced (fourth, 14.29) as the field only knocked one man out of the 10-man, two-section prelim stage. Ikwuakor’s time was his third-fastest of the year behind his pair of 14.16 efforts in the Pac-10 prelims and final last meet in Tucson.
In the 400 hurdles, senior Brandon Holliday advanced to the final after he ranked third in a time of 51.51, behind UCLA’s Jonathan Williams (first, 50.97) and Brandon Johnson (second, 51.38).
The Ducks advanced another to the 400 final courtesy of sophomore Matt Scherer (fourth, 46.14), while ASU’s Jason Barton led the field (45.77). Scherer’s time was the second-fastest of her career behind his time from the Pac-10 final two weeks ago (45.95) that moved him to third all-time for the Ducks behind 1960 Olympic gold medalist and world record holder Otis Davis (45.07) and 1995 Pac-10 champ Pat Johnson (45.38).
Also in the 400, sophomore Travis Anderson (10th, 46.90) missed the ninth and final advancing slot by .07 seconds, and junior Kedar Inico (14th, 47.28) made his regional debut.
