Duck Multi-Eventers Enjoy Strong First Day in Pac-10 Hep/Dec
TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Oregon men’s and women’s track and field teams opened duty in the Pac-10 Championships Friday at Roy Drachman Stadium at the University of Arizona with three of the four Duck multi-event vets ahead of personal best pace.
In the women’s heptathlon, redshirt senior Abby Andrus stood in fifth place with 3,176 points - a 68-point first day personal best that eclipsed her former mark from last year’s conference opener (3,108). Arizona State freshman Jackie Johnson led the field after the opening four events (3,421), ahead of Cal’s Brooke Meredith (second, 3,260), WSU’s Julie Pickler (third, 3,198), Washington’s Grace Vela (fourth, 3,189) and Andrus. Other competitors Friday included UCLA’s Natassja Hall (sixth, 2,999) and Georgea Richards (seventh, 2,927) and Arizona’s Amanda Underwood (eighth, 2,881) and Jessica Corkill (ninth, 2,659). The Peoria, Ariz., native Andrus posted opening day marks of 14.04 in the 100 hurdles (w: 0.1), 5-5 3/4 in the high jump, 35-7 3/4 in the shot put and 25.98 in the 200 (w: 0.7). Her high jump was a heptathlon personal best by two inches, and her shot put mark was a foot better than her former best from the 2003 Oregon Invite (34-7). Her hurdles mark was only .05 seconds off her hep personal best form last year (13.99, w:2.8) and her 200 was .29 seconds off her hep best (25.69). On the men’s side, all four of the Duck entries stood top eight after opening day action. Redshirt sophomore Ryan Voge posted a 93-point first-day personal best and ranks second with 3,956 points ahead and trails ASU’s Josh Kinnaman (first, 3,995). Duck redshirt senior Gabriel LeMay also improved his first-day best by 100 points and ranked third at the halfway point (3,874), and was followed 20 points behind by freshman Tommy Skipper (fourth, 3,857) who made his first decathlon appearance. Duck redshirt sophomore Andy Young (eighth, 3,578) was also in scoring position, and other first-day competitors included Cal’s Scott Sobieralski (fifth, 3,666), UCLA’s Chris Staton (sixth, 3,590), WSU’s David Turpin (seventh, 3,538) and Stanford’s Nick Taylor (ninth, 3,420). Voge came up with a 1 1/2-inch personal best in the high jump (6-9), and other new dec bests in the shot put (40-10 1/4) and long jump (23-8), and also ran 11.28 in the 100 and 50.32 in the 400. LeMay also cleared a personal best in the long jump (22-5), was .15 seconds off his best in the 400 (48.78), was a half-inch shy of his high jump (6-4 1/4), and added other first-day marks of 11.08 (100) and 40-11 1/2 (shot put). Skipper opened with an impressive 10.69 100 effort, overcame two initial fouls in the long jump to leap 20-6 1/2 on his final try, then closed with marks of 44-6 3/4 in the shot put, 6-5 1/2 in the high jump and 50.26 in the 400. Young ran 11.53 in the 100, long-jumped a dec best of 22-6 1/4, uncorked a one-foot, four-inch shot best of 36-7, high-jumped 6-2, and was only .05 seconds off his 400 best (50.32). "I was very pleased with the decathletes’ opening days," Oregon assistant coach Bill Lawson said. "Everybody is ahead of pace from their decathlon here in March, and they all competed well in virtually every event with little help from the wind.
