Men's T&F Trio Picked to Regional All-Academic Squad

EUGENE ? The University of Oregon men’s track and field team racked up a list-leading three Verizon Academic All-West Region first-team selections Tuesday.
The Duck senior trio of Ryan Andrus, Gabriel LeMay and Trevor Woods were all picked to the 10-man first team. No other regional team had more than one pick, and other Pac-10 schools with single honorees included Stanford, Washington and Washington State. Andrus owned a 3.94 GPA in business administration, LeMay sported a 3.77 GPA in biology, and Woods posted a 3.74 GPA in business.
To be eligible for the cross country and track award, nominees must have been at least a redshirt freshman that had attended their school for more than one year, and sport a minimum 3.30 grade point average. More information on the Verizon All-Academic program is available at the www.cosida.com website at the http://www.cosida.com/allamerica/default.asp address.
The Duck honorees are now under consideration for national academic All-America honors that will be announced in two weeks. Andrus received All-America first team honors in 2002-03, and was a Pac-10 First Team All-Academic pick in cross country in 2002 and 2003 and in track in 2003. All three were Pac-10 first team selections two weeks before - part of a Pac-10 leading five-man first-team group - while the Ducks also sported two more league second-team academic picks and two more honorable mentions. Looking back at their athletic resumes, two of the three are All-Americans at the NCAA Championship level (Andrus - 7th indoors in 5K in 2004; 34th in cross country in 2002; Woods - 3rd indoors in pole vault in 2002; eighth outdoors in pole vault in 2003), and LeMay missed similar honors by only 31 points with his impressive NCAA decathlon debut last week in Austin where he finished 11th (7,517) - nine places better than his pre-meet seeding (20th). The trio also combined for eight top-eight Pac-10 track and field finishes since 2001.
This season, Andrus was an 2004 NCAA automatic outdoor qualifier in the 10,000 with his personal best from the Mt. SAC Relays (28:56.67) - a time that ranks him eighth all-time for UO and seeded him 10th before the NCAA Champs. Earlier in the year, he was an All-American indoors in the 5,000 (seventh, 14:03.21), and ranked fourth nationally during the regular season with an automatic qualifying time of 13:51.00. In cross country, the Orem, Utah native finished second on the team and 51st in the 2003 NCAA Champs last November and missed the final All-America honor by three seconds. Last year on the oval, he missed his first All-America track honor by one place and one second with a then-best in the 2003 NCAA Champs 10,000 (13th, 29:11.04). Was a cross country all-league first-team pick in 2002 (sixth) and second-team selection in 2003 (11th), and also scored in the 2003 league track 10K finale (sixth) and in the 5K and 10K in 2004 (sixth/fourth). In the classroom, he was a Pac-10 All-Academic first-team selection twice in both cross country (2002, 2003) and track (2002, 2003).
LeMay claimed fourth in the Pacific-10 Conference Champs decathlon in mid-May (7,333). He also topped the 7,000-point NCAA provisional standard in his season debut in March in Tucson, Ariz. (7,175). Indoors, he ranked 17th nationally on the NCAA heptathlon qualifying list and missed an NCAA invite by only 40 points and led the conference. He closed February with a win in the Mountain Pacific Indoor Champs heptathlon (5,443 points) and easily cleared the NCAA provisional mark of 5,100 points. The Yoncalla, Ore., native arrived in Eugene in the fall of 2002 as nearby Lane Community College’s second-highest scorer (6,832) behind 2003 world champion Tom Pappas.
Woods wrapped up his Duck career this season with his fourth top-five Pac-10 pole vault finish (fourth in 2001, '02 and fifth in '03, ?04). He ended the regular season ranked 34th nationally outdoors with a season best of 17-1 1/2, and an indoor best of 17-0 that placed fifth in the Mountain Pacific Championships. Oregon’s fifth-ranked all-time vaulter outdoors (18-0 1/2) also ranks third indoors for the Ducks thanks to his All-America mark from the 2002 NCAA Indoor Champs (third, 17-11 3/4). Among his four NCAA trips, he was an All-American outdoors in 2003 (eighth, 16-10 3/4), and top nine again outdoors in 2002 (ninth). He was also a Pac-10 Conference All-Academic First Team pick as a junior in 2003, and second-team selection as a sophomore in 2002.
