Track & Field Frosh Look Forward to USA Junior Champs

EUGENE - A quartet of Duck track and field freshmen look forward to one final meet this week with the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships slated for Fri.-Sun., June 25-27 at the Frank G. Anderson Track and Field Complex at Texas A&M University.
Amanda Santana (Eugene, Ore. - North HS) will compete in the 400 hurdles Friday and Saturday after she ranked 10th overall and second among freshmen in the Pac-10 with her personal best from May’s Oregon Twilight (51.3-hand timed). In mid-May she followed with a fully-automatic season best time of 62.46 in the Pac-10 Champs prelims that placed her 12th in the Tucson Ariz.-hosted meet. Her Pac-10 best ranked her third on the Ducks this season, and she’s less than a second away from UO’s all-time top-10 list (10th is Karen Wiedmann at 61.39, 1993).
Kyle Alcorn (Buchanan, Calif. - Buchanan HS) will compete in Saturday’s steeplechase after he ranked second nationally among collegiate freshmen in 2004. He clocked an 11-second personal best of 8:54.97 to win the ?B’ section of the West Regional in late May, and overall ranked eighth in the regional and 31st on the NCAA regular season year-end rankings. In mid-May he finished ninth in the Pac-10 Champs (9:13.91), and owned a flat 3,000 best of 8:29.51 from March’s Oregon Preview. Indoors, he redshirted for the Ducks and raced once unattached in the mile in mid-January (4:13.06) in Seatte’s Husky Indoor Preview. Prior to his work with the Ducks, he was the California state runner-up on track as senior in 2003 in the 3,200 (PR 8:53), after he won the title as a junior (9:00). He ran cross country only two prep seasons, and qualified for the state finale as both a junior (seventh) and senior (second). His other prep bests included 1:57 in the 800 and 4:14 in the 1,600.
Jeff DeWolf (Bend, Ore. - Mountain View HS) is slated for Friday and Saturday’s 800 after he redshirted the outdoor and indoor seasons to adjust to the collegiate level. Outdoors in 2004, he ran unattached in three meets outdoors locally, and broke 1:54 in all three - the Oregon Twilight (fifth, 1:53.55), Oregon Preview (seventh, 1:53.39) and Pepsi Mini-Meet (fourth, 1:53.9). Indoors, he ran three 800 races, and all were sub-1:53. He logged his 800 indoor best in Seattle’s Last Chance Qualifier in early March (sixth, 1:52.39), and his indoor 400 season best came in the Mountain Pacific Champs (22nd-prelim, 49.38) in late February. As a prep, he took fourth in the 800 in 2003 4A state championships as a senior, and fifth in 400 as a junior, and owned a then-best of 1:53.59 in the 800.
Brandon Tower (Beaverton, Ore. - Beaverton HS) will add work in Saturday’s discus after he led the Ducks in the platter toss this season with a seven-foot personal best of 166-1 in the Oregon Twilight. He also led UO in the shot put outdoors (48-6 3/4) and indoors (51-3 3/4), and threw a hammer best of 151-5 in the Oregon Twilight in early May. He joined the Ducks as the state’s top combined shot put-discus throws prospect from 2003 after he won the Oregon 4A state title in the shot put (59-1), and took runner-up honors in the discus (182-2) as a senior. His prep bests of 59-1 and 184-0 came as a senior, and he also placed in the state as a junior (ninth, 139-1), and ranked third (177-2) at season’s end.
