Andrus Repeats as First Team Academic All-American

EUGENE - The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday that University of Oregon redshirt senior Ryan Andrus was selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Men’s Cross Country / Track and Field National First Team for the second straight season.
The Orem, Utah native was one of 16 first-team honorees and his 3.94 GPA in business administration was fourth-highest on the squad. The third-year Duck was also one of three first-team selections from the Pacific-10 Conference that included Stanford’s Adam Tenforde and Washington’s Brad Walker. He was also one of three repeat first-team honorees with Walker and Radford’s Goran Nava.
At the conference level, Andrus was one of a league-leading five first-team all-academic picks earlier this month for the Men of Oregon after he was accorded similar honors in 2002 and 2003. In cross country, he was also a three-time all-academic first team selection.
On the track this spring, Andrus was an 2004 NCAA automatic outdoor qualifier in the 10,000 with his personal best from the Mt. SAC Relays (28:56.67) - a time that ranks him eighth all-time for UO and seeded him 10th before the NCAA Champs. Earlier this year, he was an All-American indoors in the 5,000 (seventh, 14:03.21), and ranked fourth nationally during the regular season with an automatic qualifying time of 13:51.00.
A three-time NCAA cross country veteran, he earned All-America honors in 2002 (34th) and helped the Ducks to fifth place as a team, and followed with a 51st-place finish last fall in the collegiate finale. Last year on the oval, he missed the final All-America track honor by one place and one second with a then-best in the 2003 NCAA Champs 10,000 (13th, 29:11.04). He was one of only two runners to finish top six this May in the Pac-10 Championship 5,000 (sixth) and 10,000 (fourth), and also scored in the 2003 league finale in the 10K (sixth). In cross country he was an all-league first-team pick in 2002 (sixth) and second-team selection in 2003 (11th).
Two weeks ago, Andrus and fellow Duck seniors Gabriel LeMay and Trevor Woods were all picked to the 10-man regional first team. No other regional team had more than one pick, and other Pac-10 schools with single honorees included Stanford, Washington and Washington State. LeMay sported a 3.77 GPA in biology and Woods posted a 3.74 GPA in business.
Andrus became the eighth Duck men’s track and field athlete and 11th overall (including repeat honorees) to claim Academic All-America honors since 1986. The Duck men have been on a roll in the classroom the past five seasons under head coach Martin Smith with at least two, first- or second-team national honorees in 2001, 2002 and 2003, and single honorees in 1999 and 2000. Among that group, Santiago Lorenzo (First Team, 2003; Second Team, 2001) and John Stiegeler (Second Team, 2001, 2003) were also NCAA outdoor champions on the track in the 2001 in the decathlon and javelin, respectively, held in Eugene at Hayward Field. Another recent Duck, Steve Fein, was a repeat second-team Academic All-American in 1999 and 2000, and was an All-American athletically on the oval (1,500/5,000) and in cross country both seasons for the Ducks.

Andrus becomes the second Oregon track and field athlete this week to earn Academic All-America honors after senior pole vaulter and two-time NCAA veteran Kirsten Larwin was tabbed to the women’s national third team for her 3.89 GPA. The Eugene native and South High School product was a French major, and the only Pac-10 female student-athlete honored among the 45 first, second and third team picks. She was also a Pac-10 All-Academic First Team selection in 2003 and 2004 and a Second Team member as a sophomore in 2002. The four-time Pac-10 top-10 pole vault placer ranks third all-time for the Ducks with her personal best from May’s conference showdown (13-6 1/4). The distinction was the 11th by a Duck woman and 15th overall (including repeat honors) since 1983.
To be eligible for the cross country and track award, nominees must have been at least a redshirt freshman that had attended their school for more than one year, be a starter or key reserve on their squad, and sport a minimum 3.20 grade point average. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Division I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
