Wrestling Falls in Closing Seconds to Beavers, 21-18
EUGENE ? In one of the most exciting matches in Civil War series history, the University of Oregon wrestling team (5-10, 2-6) lost to Oregon State 21-18 at McArthur Court in front of 923 fans Sunday. OSU scored a takedown with 17 second remaining in the final match of the day to squeak out the victory.
The Beavers jumped out to a 15-6 lead with wins at 125-pounds, 141 and 157, while Oregon won by forfeit at 133.
No. 17 Joey Bracamonte improved to 23-3 with a 3-1 decision over Oregon State’s No. 18 Matt Ellis. Bracamonte and Ellis are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 respectively in the Pac-10.
The Beavers notched another win at 174 with Jeremy Larson scoring a 6-1 decision over UO’s Chet McBee and giving OSU an 18-9 lead.
The Ducks refuse to quit as junior Shane Webster moved up to 184 for the first time this season and notched a decision victory over Dan Pitsch. Webster is 17-2 on the season
Down six, Oregon tied the score after senior Scott Barker recorded his team-leading 14th pin of the season over OSU’s Travis Gardner at 197. Barker, ranked fifth nationally, is now 28-5 on the season.
With the score knotted 18-18, sophomore heavyweight Cody Parker took a 3-2 lead over Oregon State’s Jamie Rakevich deep into the third period, but Rakevich scored a takedown with 17 seconds remaining, sending the Beavers back to Corvallis with a 21-18 victory and a season sweep over the Ducks.
"We knew this was going to be a tough dual," Oregon head coach Chuck Kearney said. "Oregon State did a good job of getting up for the match. We put ourselves in a great position to come away with the victory, that is why the loss is so tough to take."
For the fourth time in the last eight meetings between the two universities, the match was determined by three points or less.
The Ducks turn right around and close out the Pac-10 dual season against Portland State on Wednesday in Salem at 7 p.m.
