Kraayeveld, Mizusawa Earn Academic All-District All-America Team Honors

EUGENE, Ore. ? They can play ball ... and hit the books too. Two seniors on the University of Oregon women’s basketball team ? Cathrine Kraayeveld and Corrie Mizusawa ? were picked to the CoSIDA Academic District VIII All-America team Thursday.
The two are the first to represent the Ducks on the all-district academic team since Natasha O’Brien in 1998.
Kraayeveld (Kirkland, Wash.), who holds a 3.36 cumulative grade-point average and received her undergraduate degree last year in family and human services, earned first team honors. Kraayeveld, a 6-foot-4 forward, leads Oregon (16-7, 9-5 Pac-10) in scoring (15.0), rebounding (9.0) and blocked shots (30). She will enter the national pool for Academic All-America honors, which will be announced in March.
Mizusawa (Lafayette, Calif.), who has a 3.84 GPA in sociology and educational studies, also achieved her bachelor’s degree earlier this year. She leads the Pac-10 in assists for the second straight year at 7.2 per game, which also is second in the nation. Mizusawa, a 5-foot-8 guard, also averages 5.1 points and 1.6 rebounds per game.
Only Stanford and Washington State were the other Pac-10 schools represented. Oregon was one of three institutions with at least two student-athletes on the first or second teams ? the others were Washington State and Gonzaga.
District VIII is comprised of members of the Pac-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic, Big Sky and Big West conferences. Student-athletes must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.20, be starters or significant contributors and at least a sophomore in academic standing. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) ? a 2,000-member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada.
