Men?s Golf Hopes for Good Weather, Better Rounds in California

EUGENE, Ore. ? Freshmen Derek Sipe and Joey Benedetti will lead the Oregon men’s golf into action at the Ashford Collegiate Invitational, Monday and Tuesday in Westlake Village, Calif. Teams will play 36 holes Monday and 18 Tuesday at the par-71, 6,815-yard North Ranch Country Club.
Host USC, the nation’s No. 8-ranked team, leads the 16-team field that includes No. 10 Brigham Young, No. 20 Washington and No. 23 Tennessee. A number of squads from the west region, like UC Irvine, UC Riverside, Oregon, Oregon State, Pepperdine, Stanford and Washington State will also be in competition at the Ashford Collegiate, which was previously known as the Cleveland Golf Classic.
Sipe has been hot this spring with 69.3 scoring average in two events. Benedetti was Oregon’s top golfer in the fall as has a 74.0 season scoring average. They will be joined in California by sophomores Eric Hastings and Matt Ma and junior Justin St. Clair from Springfield, Ore. (Thurston High).
Last year, Oregon finished 16th of 17 teams at North Ranch CC. St. Clair was the Ducks’ top finisher, tying for 32nd at 221.
