Wrestling Gives #6 Oklahoma All It Can Handle, But Falls Short, 30-22
NORMAN, Okla. ? The University of Oregon wrestling team dropped a tough dual to No. 6 Oklahoma, 30-22, at the Lloyd Noble Center Friday. Juniors Martin Mitchell and Joey Bracamonte both won by way of pin, while senior Scott Barker upped his overall record to 27-4 with a major decision victory.
The Sooners (13-4) got off to a good start, recording two pins and a major decision in the first three matches of the dual.
At 165, Bracamonte won his career-high 21st match of the season, pinning Randy Sulaver and giving Oregon its first points of the day.
Both 174 and 184 matches saw ranked Oklahoma wrestlers pick up wins and push to score to 26-6 in favor of the Sooners.
Oregon (5-8, 2-5) fought back after Barker defeated Austin David, 8-0, at 197. In his last three matches, Barker has outscored his opponents 23-0.
At heavyweight, sophomore Cody Parker defeated No. 14 Jake Hager by injury default, pulling Oregon within 10 (26-16). Parker was winning 2-1 at the time the match was called.
Oklahoma answered back at 125. No. 2-ranked Teyon Ware defeated sophomore Joey Lucas by major decision, 18-5, putting the Sooners up 30-16.
In the final match of the day, Mitchell (15-5) notched his tenth pin of the season, defeating OU’s Trey Blakely.
"I feel we are inching towards wrestling up to our capabilities," Oregon head coach Chuck Kearney said. "We had some impressive wins tonight and showed we can wrestle at a high level. We obviously missed Shane (Webster) but I was proud of how the entire team performed."
Junior Shane Webster (16-2) was unable to make the trip due to a pinched nerve in his neck. He could be ready for next weekend’s dual against Oregon State.
The Ducks turn right around and face No. 1 Oklahoma State tomorrow night in Stillwater at 5 p.m. The match will be available on the O-Zone.
