Ducks Set for Annual Cola Wars at Hayward

EUGENE - Oregon renews its scored-meet track and field tradition this week with the 16th annual Pepsi Team Invitational, Saturday, April 9 at Hayward Field.
Indiana returns to the meet for the third time (?91, ?97), Washington makes its eighth trip (1992, ?94, ?96, ?98, ?99, ?03, ?04) and Missouri travels to a scored affair in Eugene for the first time. Last year, the Duck M&W swept both Pepsi Invite team crowns (M 191 points, W 184 1/2 points) and featured 15 individual wins (8W, 8M).
Also this weekend, redshirt junior Andy Young flies solo mid-week to the Texas Relays to compete in the decathlon, Wed.-Thu., April 7-8. Young made his NCAA debut in Austin last June (13th, 7,302), a month after he notched a personal best in the Pac-10 Championships (third, 7,372).
The following week, the Duck teams head to the Golden Bear Invitational in Berkeley, Calif., Sat., April 16, while several individuals could compete in the Mt. SAC Relays, Fri.-Sun., April 15-17.
The UO M&W return after a two-weekend layoff and last competed in the Oregon Preview, Sat., March 19. Senior Paul Etter moved to eighth all-time for UO with his 3-foot, 1-inch hammer best (203-4), and senior Bree Fuqua won the women’s shot put (51-3 3/4) and discus (156-10). A week later during spring break, Fuqua competed in the University of Montana's Montana Open near her hometown of Polson, Mont., and broke the school shot put record with her winning, one-foot PR (53-9).

2005 DUCK WOMEN’S PREVIEW: Field Events Pace Attack.
The field events again lead the Oregon women’s charge in 2005 with a trio of double All-Americans back in the javelin ? redshirt juniors Elisa Crumley (12th in ?02, 13th in ?03) and Roslyn Lundeen (seventh in ?02, eighth in ?03) and 2004 Olympic Trials runner-up Sarah Malone (seventh in ?02, third in ?04). The pole vault sports another pair of NCAA veterans in redshirt junior Hannah Moore and sophomore Emily Enders who made NCAA trips indoors and outdoors in ?04, respectively, and finished 13th (12-11 1/2) and 15th (12-9 1/2). Senior Bree Fuqua enjoyed a successful debut campaign for UO in 2004 with an NCAA trip outdoors in the shot put thanks to her then-personal best in the West Regional (52-8 3/4) that left her second all-time for the Ducks. She was also a scorer in both the shot put (fourth, 52-5 1/2) and discus (fifth, 162-2) in the Pac-10 Champs. Senior Sofie Abildtrup paced the Ducks in all three sprint events in her debut season in ?04, and ranked top-10 outdoors all-time for UO in the 100 (10th, 12.01), 200 (seventh, 23.93) and 400 (third, 52.92) en route to an NCAA trip in the 400. Redshirt senior Laura Harmon has made three straight NCAA trips, including invites in the 5,000 indoors in ?05 (15th) and outdoors in ?04 (18th) that book-ended an All-America honor in her NCAA harrier debut in ?04 (31st). Redshirt senior Magdalena Sandoval seeks renewed health after an impressive opening to her 2003-04 slate that featured an indoor school record in the 5,000 (16:04.40) and NCAA appearances indoors and in cross country. Two newcomers in particular expect to challenge for NCAA invites immediately. Redshirt junior hammer thrower Brittany Hinchcliffe ranked 29th in the U.S. with her 200-3 best as a redshirt in ?04, and junior transfer Lauryn Jordan just missed an NCAA indoors in the pentathlon in ?05 (3,894). The addition from San Joaquin Valley Community College owns the team’s top preseason PRs in the high jump (5-8 1/2), long jump (19-10) and heptathlon (4,895), and its second-best mark in the triple jump (40-8 1/4) ? while all four would rank top-10 in school history.
2005 DUCK MEN’S PREVIEW: Ducks Flex Depth Around the Track.
The UO men return after a best-ever sixth-place NCAA indoor finish in March, thanks to a school record nine qualifiers and eight All-America honors that included another pole vault crown from sophomore pole vaulter Tommy Skipper. The Duck sprint and hurdle crew ranks among the nation’s best with a pair of indoor All-American indoors in the 400 in ?05 ? senior Kedar Inico (sixth) and junior Matt Scherer (ninth), joined by 2004 NCAA outdoor 110 hurdle runner-up and junior Eric Mitchum ? a three-time All-American and school record holder in the 110 hurdles (13.38). The UO 4x400 relay has run school records indoors in ?05 (3:04.17) and outdoors in ’04 (3:03.49), and followed with fifth-place finishes in both NCAA chases. Skipper is the top returning outdoor collegian with his 2004 Pac-10 record (18-10 1/4) but is expected to miss the first 4-6 weeks of the season after left knee surgery in mid-March ? an injury he competed through three indoor meets that included an NCAA win (18-4 1/2) and USA runner-up finish (18-2 1/2). Last year, he won the NCAA outdoor crown (18-8 1/4) and took second indoors (18-4 1/2), and also broke the school indoor record with a mark of 18-8 3/4. Redshirt senior Leonidas Watson has rewritten the school long jump and triple jump indoor records several times the past two seasons. He sports current indoor bests of 25-11 and 52-10 1/4, and was an All-American indoors in ?04 (ninth) and ?05 (fourth, PR 25-11). Redshirt seniors Eric Logsdon and Brett Holts have combined for seven All-America honors in cross country and track and field. Logsdon has won three honors in the 5,000 on the oval indoors in ?05 (seventh) and outdoors in ?04 (seventh) and ?03 (eighth) and in cross country in 2003 (29th) and ?02 (41st). This past indoor season in a five-week span, he also sped to school indoor records in the mile (4:01.86) and 5,000 (13:49.99) and moved to #2 in the 3,000 (7:54.29). Holts is a three-time top-four Pac-10 placer in the steeplechase and was an All-American over the NCAA barriers in ?04 (seventh), and in cross country in ?02 (43rd). Senior hammer thrower Paul Etter was an NCAA qualifier in ?04 in the hammer and a top-six placer in his 2004 Pac-10 and West Regional debuts (sixth/fifth). Other Ducks with NCAA experience include redshirt sophomore sprinter Jordan Kent (200, 20th, 2003), junior 110 hurdler A.K. Ikwuakor (110 hurdles, 23rd, 2004), indoor heptathlon All-American and redshirt junior Ryan Voge (10th, 2005) and redshirt junior decathlete Andy Young (13th, 2004). Top newcomers include junior sprint transfer Richard Del Rincon (100 10.23w-10.40; 200 20.57w-20.87) and freshman Canadian steepler Chris Winter (8:54.94). Recent Danish national javelin runner-up Lars Laursen (javelin 233-6) joined the team for the spring term, as did state distance star Galen Rupp ? the U.S. junior record holder for the 3,000 (8:03.57) and 5,000 (13:37.91).
PEPSI MEN’S TASTER: Oregon Looks For Revenge Against Indiana.
The Indiana men, fifth in the recent NCAA Indoor Championships with 30 points, edged the sixth-place Men of Oregon by one point in Fayetteville in mid-March. Hoosier junior Aarik Wilson became the fifth collegian to win the long jump and triple jump in the same indoor collegiate finale (26-9 3/4; 55-6 1/4). Junior Sean Jefferson took second in the NCAA indoor mile in ?05 (4:01.56) after he won the crown as a sophomore in ?04, while twin brother John took second as a freshman in ?03 and was seventh this year (4:03.96). Fellow All-America junior distance runner Stephen Haas dropped more than 30 seconds off his indoor 3,000 record in February to rank second on the collegiate season best list (7:51.00) and smash Olympic alumni Bob Kennedy’s school record (7:55.93). Missouri is paced by senior All-America thrower Conrad Woolsey, a shot put All-American indoors in ?04 (eighth) and ?05 (eighth) and outdoors in ?04 (seventh). The Tiger throws corps welcomed prep discus All-American and freshman Chris Rohr (209-8 prep discus) who was third in the 2004 U.S. Junior Championships. All-America decathlete Hans Uldal added sixth in the NCAA men’s heptathlon in March (5,546). Sophomore Marcus Mayes was the U.S. junior 800 runner-up last year and ran a frosh PR of 1:49.94. The young Husky squad returns after an eighth-place Pac-10 finish last May in Tucson, and feature a pair of freshman All-Americans. Seattle area native Norris Frederick led the collegiate long jump qualifying list early in the indoor slate with a PR of (25-6 1/4) then took sixth in the NCAA finale (25-5 1/2). He also cleared 7-0 1/4 indoors in ?05, and owned a prep best of 7-1 from ?04. Fellow frosh Austin Abbott dropped his 1,600 PR from a prep best of 4:15.27 to 4:02.25 indoors in ?05, and ran on the squad’s All-America distance medley relay (fifth, 9:36.40). Outdoors in ?05, he followed with an 800 PR of 1:48.57 in the Stanford Invite to join the UW all-time top-10. Last year’s spectators may remember that the Huskies won the Pepsi 4x400 crown in a meet record (3:09.14), ahead of a pair of eventual top-five NCAA outdoor placers in Minnesota (second) and Oregon (fifth).
PEPSI WOMEN’S TASTER: Team Crown Up For Grabs.
Indiana's junior distance runner Jessica Gall made her NCAA indoor track debut in March in the 5,000 (14th, 16:37.42), and owned a season best of 16:03.27. Last fall she took All-America cross country honors with her 18th-place NCAA finish, while senoir Mindy Peterson was similarly decorated in 2003 (46th). Pole vaulter Emily Tharpe entered '05 with school records in the pole vault (12-10 outdoors, 12-11 3/4 indoors). Junior sprinter Ara Towns was an All-American in the NCAA 60 indoors in '04 (12th), and earned All-America relay honors in the 4x100 in '03 (fifth, 43.57) and '02 (seventh). Hoosiers with key points in the '04 Big Ten Oudtoor Championships include Gall (5K, third; 10K, fourth), sophomore 100 hurdler Courtney Johnson (second, PR 13.54) and senior high jumper Christina Archibald (second, PR 5-10). Missouri annually sports one of the nation’s top middle distance units, and junior Ashley Patten added an All-America honor indoors in 2005 in the 800 (eighth, 2:11.90) in March. Junior Amanda Bales was an All-American in cross country in 2003 (23rd) and was 13th in the NCAA 5K outdoors last spring. Patten and Bales also ran the opening and closing legs on the distance medley with Whittney Stuart and Trisa Nickoley that took ninth in the '05 indoor NCAA finale (season best 11:18.62). Senior pole vaulter Jennifer Bennett was an indoor All-American in 2003 (sixth, 13-7 1/4). Washington is paced by pint-sized pole vaulter and Portland native Kate Soma who was second in the recent NCAA indoor meet (14-1 1/4) after additional All-America honors outdoors in 2004 (fourth) and ?03 (seventh). Pole vault teammates Ashley Wildhaber was also an All-American in ?05 (fifth, PR 13-9 1/4), and UW had two other entries in the meet (Stevie Marshalek, 13th; Carly Dockendorf, 17th). Sophomore hurdler Ashley Lodree was an All-American indoors in 2005 in the 60 hurdles (10th) and also qualified as a freshman in ?04 (14th). In the distances, freshman Amanda Miller nabbed All-America honors indoors in her NCAA 800 debut in March (10th) after she ran a regular season best of 2:08.33, while Lindsey Egerdahl was eighth in the NCAA indoor mile (PR 4:43.86).

EUGENE (4/10/04) ? The Oregon M&W swept the men’s and women’s crowns in the same meet for the eighth time in the last season's Pepsi Team Invitational at Hayward Field. The Duck women capitalized on eight event wins to tally 184 1/2 points and edge Washington (169), Minnesota (third, 160 1/2) and Colorado (100). Duck women’s winners included Sofie Abildtrup (200, 23.94; 400, 54.49), Sara Schaaf (800, 2:10.15), the 4x400 relay (3:46.92), Rachael Kriz (high jump, 5-8), Clarice Hayward-Lee (triple jump, 40-4 3/4), Megan Kriz (hammer, 181-9) and Sarah Malone (javelin, 167-10). Among individual highlights, the women’s throwers featured a 10-foot hammer best by Kriz who climbed to fourth all-time for the Ducks. The elder Kriz Rachael enjoyed a 3/4-inch high jump personal best, and windy jump bests came from Abby Andrus (long jump, second 18-11 1/4w (+2.6 wind)) and Clarice Hayward-Lee (triple jump, first, 40-4 3/4w, 3.7w). Near personal bests were posted by redshirt sophomore Sara Schaaf (800, first, 2:10.15) , junior Kayla Mellot (400H, third, 61.43), and seniors Andrus (100H, second, 14.06, w:3.5), Jill Hoxmeier (discus, second, 161-7) and Kirsten Larwin (pole vault, second, 13-1 3/4). On the men’s side, the Ducks posted eight individual titles to rack up 191 points and outdistance Minnesota (second, 169), Washington (third, 144) and Colorado (fourth, 101). Individual UO men’s champions included Travis Anderson (400, 47.04), Eric Mitchum (110 hurdles, 13.70; 400 hurdles, 51.47), Jeff Lindsey (high jump, 7-1 3/4), Tommy Skipper (pole vault, 17-5), Leonidas Watson (long jump, 24-2 1/4; triple jump, 48-10 3/4) and Adam Jenkins (javelin, 218-0). Mitchum’s .67-second victory margin was a .05-second wind-legal then-PR and missed Micah Harris’s then-school record by only .03 seconds (13.67). Later in the afternoon, he returned to win the 400 hurdles (51.47) by a scant .05-second margin over senior teammate Brandon Holliday who ran a .37-second season best out of lane one (second, 51.52). Mitchum’s time stood as a two-second personal best and left him .03 seconds shy of 10th all-time for UO. Anderson (400, 47.04) was .10 seconds off his personal best, and came back for second in the 200 in a personal best (21.27, w:1.9). Transfer Kedar Inico made his Duck home debut and placed top four in the 200 (third, 21.47, w:1.9) and 400 (fourth, 47.43) for a Pac-10 qualifier in the latter event. In the distances, Eric Logsdon (fifth, 3:49.09) met the Pac-10 1,500 mark (3:50.14) and was less than a second shy of the regional standard (3:48.21). The Men of Oregon again received scoring help from the football ranks as Ryan Gilliam and Brian Paysinger took second (10.72w, w:2.3) and sixth (11.23w) in their collegiate 100 debuts, and 340-pound defensive lineman Haloti Ngata scored in the shot put in his first meet since his sophomore prep season (sixth, 45-10 3/4).

LAST MEET’S MEN’S RECAP: Ikwuakor, Rexius & Tower Score Wins in Preview.
EUGENE (3/19/05) ? A scaled-back Men of Oregon unit rode blustery spring winds to four wins and three regional qualifying marks in the Oregon Preview, their outdoor season opener three weekends ago at Hayward Field. A pair of hurdlers ? sophomore Sol Rexius and junior A.K. Ikwuakor ? helped UO to wins in the 110 hurdles (14.75W, w:5.3) and 400 hurdles (52.86), respectively. Rexius improved his wind-aided personal best from his prior mark of 14.93 from 2004, while Ikwuakor was nearly a half-second off his Duck best from 2004 (52.32). On the regional qualifying charts, Rexius was less than a half-second off the 14.33 qualifying mark, and Ikwuakor was .35 seconds off his standard (52.51). The duo returned to run the second and fourth legs on the 4x400 relay that won the meet’s final event (3:21.68) by more than a second over Lane CC (second, 3:23.09). Other Duck baton passers included Rob Gillespie and Andy Young on the first and third legs, respectively. In other sprints, junior newcomer Richard Del Rincon made his Duck debut in the 100 (10.4-hand-timed) and .1 seconds shy of the win. Senior Paul Etter scored a 3 foot, 1 inch personal best in the hammer (second, 203-4), and trailed only former Duck and two-time All-American and Pac-10 champion Adam Kriz (first, 204-2). The second-year Duck and former Clackamas transfer Etter debuted on the UO all-time list in eighth place, and jumped ahead of Jeremy Robinson (202-7) and Nick Anastassiades (202-1). In the javelin, the newcomer pair of junior Matt Adams and freshman Brian Wuethrich placed second (202-5) and third (202-0) as they set their sights on the West Regional qualifying standard (202-2). The duo also topped their previous personal bests of 199-10 and 194-6, respectively, that came in 2004 for Central Arizona JC and North Bend High School (North Bend, Ore.). Sophomore Brandon Tower added a win in the discus (151-8), and edged Adams (second, 137-11) and unattached Duck junior Cody Fleming (third, 135-9). Tower placed second earlier in the day in the shot put with a 2 foot, 2 1/2 inch outdoor best (50-9 1/4). Redshirt junior pole vaulter Jon Derby navigated the ever-changing tailwinds to second place (16-6 3/4) ? only three inches off his outdoor personal best (16-9 1/4) ? and earned a regional invite for the third straight year. The scaled-back unit had finished winter term final exams the day prior, and came off one its busiest and most decorated indoor campaign ever that included one NCAA title among its eight All-America award and nine NCAA invites.
LAST MEET’S WOMEN’S RECAP: Hammer Throwers Tap Spring Zephyrs.
EUGENE (3/19/04) - The Duck women rode blustery spring winds to seven wins and eight regional qualifying marks in the Oregon Preview, three weekends ago at Hayward Field. The field event corps paced the women with wins in all four throws events and the pole vault. Redshirt senior Bree Fuqua won the shot put (51-3 3/4) and discus (156-10) with regional qualifiers in both. The NCAA shot put veteran was only 1 foot, 5 inches off her outdoor shot put best from last season (52-8 3/4), and 7 feet, 3 inches off last year’s discus PR (164-1). Redshirt senior Sarah Malone also braved 20-30 mph gales early in the day to win the javelin (150-11) over fellow All-American Elisa Crumley (second, 142-6), as both easily topped the 141-6 regional qualifying mark. Crumley made her first appearance for the Ducks since the summer of 2003 after she redshirted outdoors in 2004 after fall season arm surgery. She last competed in an Oregon jersey in the 2003 NCAA (13th, 153-5) and USA Championships (15th, 133-3). In the hammer, redshirt and unattached Duck junior Britney Henry won her Hayward Field debut (first, 201-2) over Team XO member and former UCLA All-American Cari Soong (second, 198-11). Henry joined the Ducks last fall and threw for LSU in 2004 (207-9 PR) and Southeast Louisiana in 2003, and will sit out this year due to NCAA twice-transfer rules. Also in the hammer, redshirt junior Brittany Hinchcliffe followed in third place (184-1). The Bellevue, Wash., native made her official UO debut after she redshirted in 2004 (although she threw 200-3 unattached). Her outdoor season debut moved her to fourth all-time for the Ducks in the event behind Jordan Sauvage (first, 191-4), Maureen Morrison (second, 186-6) and junior teammate Megan Kriz (third, 185-0). Redshirt senior Katie Kersh (fourth, 176-8) added another regional qualifier in the hammer since she also topped the 177-7 mark, and her 1 foot, 9 inch personal best left her seventh all-time for UO, only two inches behind former teammate Mary Etter (sixth, 176-10, 2001). Redshirt junior pole vaulter Hannah Moore donned an Oregon singlet on the outdoor circuit for the first time since 2003, and won (12-5 1/2) on fewer misses over sophomore teammate Emily Enders (second, 12-5 1/2). Both athletes had to nearly call the competition off at the next height (12-9 1/2), as strong tail winds kept knocking the bar off for a 15-20-minute stretch, before the weather calmed enough for three attempts by each. On the track, redshirt junior Sara Schaaf cruised to a 1 1/2-second win in the 400 (57.42), and freshman distance runner Sarah Pearson added a 1 1/2-second victory in the 1,500 (4:38.33) that was barely two seconds off her prep personal best (4:36.17) that came as a junior in the 2003 4A state championship, also held at Hayward Field.

COACHING UPDATE: Gray Assumes Interim Director Title.
Outdoors in 2005, the Ducks are under the temporary direction of associate athletic director Gary Gray, who stepped into the role of interim director of track and field after the resignation of former coach Martin Smith on March 18. Gray serves as the department’s compliance director and also held prior titles of assistant athletic director and director of student services since he joined the staff in 1984. The State Center, Iowa native already oversaw the program as part of his administrative duties, and serves in the same capacity for the cross country and wrestling teams.
TYSON ON BOARD: Former Duck Tabbed Interim Men’s Distance Coach.
After the departure of former head coach Martin Smith, former Duck Pat Tyson joined the team in late March as a men’s volunteer distance coach for the spring season. As an athlete, the former walk-on was a two-time NCAA competitor for the Ducks in cross country (33rd in 1971, 54th in ?72) as the squad placed first and third, respectively, those seasons for former coach Bill Dellinger. On the track, Tyson ended his collegiate career in ?73 with top-six rankings for the Ducks in the 3-mile (sixth, 13:37.0) and 6-mile (fourth, 28:34.0). After graduation, he quickly started a 31-year prep coaching career that included a pair of initial stops in Seattle. However, he is best known as the men’s distance mentor at Mead High School in Spokane, Wash, and guided the Panthers to 26 combined individual titles (track and cross country) and 12 state cross country team titles since his arrival in 1986. His harrier teams have ranked top-five nationally seven seasons, and last fall his squad took third in the inaugural Nike Team Nationals in Portland. His seven Footlocker National Championships qualifiers rank third-most of any boy’s program nationally, and include a pair of Mead alum ? Matthew and Micah Davis ? that combined for five All-America honors in track and cross country for UO.
HAYWARD FIELD PROFILE: Eugene Welcomed its Ninth NCAA Finale in ?01.
One of the most famous track facilities in the world, Hayward Field is named for Bill Hayward, who coached the Oregon’s men’s team from 1904-1947. Originally dedicated in 1919, the 10,205-seat stadium now boasts a standing room capacity of 10,500. The Mecca for American Track and Field will welcome the third-annual West Regional Championships, May 27-28 this season, and the Pacific-10 Conference Championships return to Eugene in 2006. The venue welcomed the world’s fastest, strongest and most explosive to a Triple Crown of great meets in 2001 ? the NCAA Outdoor Championships, Prefontaine Classic (www.preclassic.com) and USA Outdoor Championships. Altogether, nine NCAA Championships (1962-64-72-78-74-77-91-96-01) have visited Track City USA, along with three Olympic Trials (1972-76-80) and six U.S. Championships (AAU 1971-75, TAC 1986, USATF-1993-99-01). Since the NCAA started rotating outdoor championships sites in 1934, Oregon has welcomed more finals (9) than any other school. California follows with eight (although they haven’t hosted one since 1968), and no other school has hosted more than five.
ALL-AMERICA EQUATION: Breaking down the NCAA Honor.
Based on their NCAA Championships performances, individuals are awarded All-America honors at season’s end by the U.S. Track Coaches Association. The top-eight finishers from each event are honored regardless of citizenship, and any additional U.S. finishers that are among the top eight American finishers are also rewarded. If necessary, the U.S.-based honors can even extend to the top performances in the preceding qualifying round if there are not eight Americans in the event’s final.
