West Regional Coach/Athlete Information

The top collegians from the West Coast states of Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Utah will do battle in one of the nation's finest track meets in the third-annual 2005 West Regional Championships, scheduled for Hayward Field in Eugene, Fri.-Sat., May 27-28 (and one of four held simultaneously around the country).
The top five finishers from each regional indiviudal event (and top three in each relay) automatically advance to the NCAA Championships, Wed.-Sat., June 8-11 in Sacramento, Calif. The following Monday, another 5-8 athletes per event that finished sixth, seventh or eighth in their regionals (often because of injury, sickness, etc.) will also be selected by the NCAA championships committee via an at-large method based on season bests.
Athletes are invited to compete in the regional as long as they met outdoor regional qualifying standards that were based on the 100th best mark in each event from 2004. A list of regional qualifying standards is available on the STATISTICS dropdown menu on the www.GoDucks.com track and field main page.
On Friday, the first field event is at noon (men's discus), the first running event is at 4 pm (women's 4x100 relay prelims), and the final event gets over at approximately 8:30 pm.
On Saturday, the first field event is at 11 am (women's discus), the first running event is at 2:45 pm (women's 4x100 relay), and the last event ends at approximately 6:30 pm.

Last day to earn a qualifying mark for the regional championships or the national championships for the combined events and the 10,000-meter run.
Tuesday, May 17
Deadline for submitting the POP forms. All POP forms and updates are due by 1 p.m. Eastern time.
Wednesday, May 18
Online declarations begin.
The NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Committee will post declaration forms online for all institutions whose student-athletes meet regional qualifying standards or are conference champions, regardless of position on the descending order lists, by 1 p.m. Eastern time, Wednesday, May 18. Coaches will have access to their declaration form and can make changes up to the deadline of 2 p.m. Eastern time, Saturday, May 21. Declaration forms or changes submitted after the 2 p.m. Eastern time deadline and prior to 5 p.m. Eastern time, will be accepted as late and the institution will be fined $300. There is no opportunity to submit declaration forms after 5 p.m. Eastern time, May 21. All athletes not declared by their institution will be scratched from regional competition.
Access to the declaration form is controlled through the same password assigned for POP form submission. Any coach unable to access the online declaration form after 1 p.m. Eastern time, Wednesday, May 18, must contact Bob Podkaminer (phone: 707/545-1781 or email: rpodkam@aol.com) for assistance.
All student-athletes must be declared or scratched on the declaration form in every event in which they qualify. There is no reason to list preferences on the regional declaration form because athletes must compete in all of their declared events.
Thursday, May 19
The challenge period for any marks posted on the 2005 descending order lists began March 1 and ends at 4 p.m. Eastern time, Thursday, May 19. All challenges must be emailed to Bob Podkaminer at rpodkam@aol.com.
Saturday, May 21
Close of online declarations. The deadline is 2 p.m. Eastern time.
Sunday, May 22
The final list of student-athletes who have been declared in each regional championship will be posted on the NCAA Web site by 12:00 midnight, Eastern time.
Monday, May 23
Deadline for medical scratches from the Regional Meet. Final notice of scratches for those ill or injured must be submitted to the committee by 3 p.m. Eastern time. All scratches must be e-mailed to Bob Podkaminer (email only: rpodkam@aol.com). Failure to notify Mr. Podkaminer could result in a $200 fine.

Hayward Field Practice Schedule
Practice will be permitted at Hayward Field (all venues) beginning at 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 25 and Thursday, May 26. Hayward Field will not be available for practice at any time beginning Friday, May 27 and ending with the conclusion of the meet Saturday, May 28. Athletes wishing to practice may use the practice track located immediately adjacent to Hayward Field.

Credentials
Credentials will be issued to each declared student athlete. Coaches credentials will be distributed in accordance with NCAA limitations on size of coaching staff. Each school will be issued a maximum of four coaches’ credentials per NCAA rules. In addition, one team manager and one administrator may receive a credential. Each institution will be allowed one additional pass if a medical trainer or physician is accompanying the team. The medical credential will be issued by the host institution’s sports medicine staff.
Implement Inspection
Implements may be inspected from 9:00 am to 4:10 pm on Friday, May 27 and from 8:00 am to 2:30 pm on Saturday, May 28. Weigh-in for all throwing events will be conducted up to 90 minutes prior to the start of the event. Weigh-ins will be conducted in the building located at the southeast corner of Hayward Field (adjacent to the 1500 meter start line). All implements will be impounded at the time of weigh-in. Certified implements will then be transported and made available at the event site. Competitors will use their own implements, provided they have been certified as legal. The host institution will provide no implements. All implements may be picked up at weights and measures no sooner than 30 minutes following the conclusion of the event final.
Special Coaches’ Area
The first two rows of the West Grandstands, East Grandstands and Hammer Venue grandstands will be reserved for working coaches.
Coach’s Hospitality
There will be an area located on top of the weights and measures building for coaches’ hospitality. The hospitality tent will be open from 12:00 noon ? 8:00 pm on Friday, May 27, and from 11:00 am ? 6:30 pm on Saturday, May 28. Coaches’ credentials will be required for admission.
Equipment
Any legal relay baton may be used. Meet management will have batons available for those teams needing one. Only starting blocks provided by meet management may be used. 3/16” pyramid spikes are recommended and no spikes longer than 1/4” will be permitted except in the javelin and high jump, where 3/8” spikes may be used. Athletes with spikes that do not meet these criteria will not be admitted to their event.
Relay Teams
Relay cards will be completed by the coaches during the packet pick-up period. Changes in relay teams must by reported to the Running Clerk during athlete check-in. Please consult the Championship Handbook for regulations specific to the relay teams.
Pole/Implement Storage
Vaulting poles and field event implements may be stored in the shed located at the southeast corner of Hayward Field (the weights and measure building adjacent to the 1500 meter start line).
Protests
The protest table will be located in the clerk’s circle located underneath the scoreboard (south end of Hayward Field).
Competitor’s Numbers
Athletes must wear both numbers (the smaller of the two on the front, the larger of the two on the back). Athletes competing in the high jump and/or pole vault may wear one number on wither the front or the back. Hip numbers will be assigned to all runners during the check-in procedure located in the clerk’s circle (located underneath the scoreboard at the south end of Hayward Field). NUMBERS CANNOT BE ALTERED IN ANY FASHION.
Drop Off Zone
Athletes may be dropped off at the east entrance of Hayward Field (located at the corner of 17th and Agate). Teams will need to park in the Romania parking lot (a map detailing this will be provided in each packet), as there is no reserved parking at Hayward Field.
Parking Passes
There will be no passes required for team parking.
Athlete Seating
Seating for all athletes and all athlete support will be located in the General Admission areas of the East Grandstands.
Media Information
Assistant Athletic Director Dave Williford and Assistant Director Geoff Thurner will serve as media coordinators for the West Regional Championships. Media credential application forms are available on the www.GoDucks.com website on the West Regional Info dropdown menu, and must be returned to the Media Services office ASAP (F: 541-346-5449, and please call 541-346-5488 afterwards to confirm that the form was received). Media credentials may be picked up at the ticket office Will Call window in the Bowerman Building on the northwest side of the track on 15th Avenue, and the office opens an hour before the first event each day. Five shared phone lines will be available on press row for use by media at all times, and WiFi access can be arranged in advance by contacting Geoff Thurner of the UO-Athletics Media Service office at gthurner@uoregon.edu or by phone at 541/346-5488 several days in advance. Post-race interviews will be conducted in the white media tent in the mixed zone adjacent to the finish line, on the west edge of the scoreboard fence. On the infield, video photographers are asked not to use tripods for the safety of the athletes and to preserve spectator's sightlines. Live results will be updated during the meet at the www.NCAAsports.com website, and results packets will be available at the end of each night. Media requests for AP-style post-meet results via email can also be made to Geoff Thurner (gthurner@uoregon.edu) in advance, and links to results will also be available through the www.GoDucks.com website. Opposing SIDs are encouraged to mail media guides in advance to the UO Athletics Media Services Office at 2727 Leo Harris Parkway, Eugene OR 97401 (P: 541-346-5488). Media hoping to pick up credentials before Friday can call the SID office in advance and arrange for pick-up at the Len Casanova Center during normal business hours.
Results and Heat Sheets
Coaches will receive tickets inside their coaches packets that will allow them to pick up one copy of each day’s heat sheets and results. Tickets can be redeemed in the lobby of the Bowerman Building until 5:00 pm on Friday and 4:00 pm on Saturday. Heat/flight sheets for each day of competition, as well as event-by-event results, will also be posted on the fence adjacent to the hammer venue. Results will be available for pick-up beginning one hour after the conclusion of the day’s competition in the press box.
Dressing Facilities
Changing rooms, showers, and towels will be available each day in the Bowerman Building.
Training Room Facilities

Athlete Flow
Note: Check with the Clerk of the Course (located in the Clerk’s Circle, under the scoreboard at the south end of the stadium) if you have any questions regarding athlete flow and the check-in procedures.
* Running Events:
1. Athletes enter the warm-up area on the south end of the stadium via the path near the green maintenance shed.
2. Athletes must check-in at the clerk’s circle (located under the scoreboard at the south end of the stadium) at least 60 minutes prior the start of their scheduled event.
3. Athletes must again report to the Clerk’s Circle 15 minutes prior to the start of their event before being directed to the starting line.
4. Once at the starting line, baskets will be available at the for athletes to place their sweats in. These baskets will then be brought to the mixed-zone at the south end of the track at the conclusion of each event.
5. Athletes need to go to the mixed-zone once the race is completed to pick-up their sweats, as well as to be available for the media and interviews.
* Jumping Events
1. Athletes enter the warm-up area on the south end of the stadium via the path near the green maintenance shed.
2. Athletes must check-in at the clerk’s circle (located under the scoreboard at the south end of the stadium) at least 90 minutes prior the start of their scheduled event. Before the start of each flight, the athletes will be introduced.
Pole Vault ? All vaulters need to check in at the Clerk’s Circle 2 hours before the start of their event. Vaulters will need to again report to the Clerk’s Circle 90 minutes before the scheduled start of the pole vault before being directed to the event site.
Horizontal Jumps ? The final 10 minutes of the warm-up period will be limited to the competitors in the first flight. Each subsequent flight will receive ten minutes to warm-up prior to their flight.
Finals ? Once the final flight is completed, athletes will need to go to the mixed-zone to pick-up their sweats, as well as to be available for the media and interviews.
* Throwing Events
1. Athletes enter the warm-up area on the south end of the stadium via the path near the green maintenance shed.
2. Athletes must check-in at the clerk’s circle (located under the scoreboard at the south end of the stadium) at least 90 minutes prior the start of their scheduled event. Before the start of each flight athletes will be introduced.
3. Impounded implements that have been certified for competition will be delivered to the event site 75 minutes prior to the scheduled start of the event.
The final ten minutes of the warm-up period will be limited to the competitors in the first flight. Each subsequent flight will receive ten minutes to warm-up prior to their flight.
Finals ? Once the final flight is completed, athletes will need to go to the mixed-zone to pick-up their sweats, as well as to be available for the media and interviews.

Team Parking
Athletes may be dropped off at the east entrance of Hayward Field (located at the corner of 17th and Agate). Teams will need to park in the Romania parking lot located at 2020 Franklin Boulevard, as there is no reserved parking at Hayward Field. There will be no passes required for team parking.

1: From Airport Baggage Claim/Parking Lot, follow Douglas Drive .25 miles to Northrup Drive and continue another .25 miles SOUTH to stop sign at corner of Airport Road.
2: Turn LEFT (east) onto AIRPORT RD and go 1.3 miles to stoplight at HIGHWAY 99.
3: Turn RIGHT (south) onto HIGHWAY 99 and go 1.4 miles to exit for BELTLINE HIGHWAY and take exit immediately after overpass (south edge).
4: Take exit for BELTLINE HWY EAST toward I-5/SPRINGFIELD and go 3.6 miles to DELTA HIGHWAY exit.
5: Take first DELTA HWY exit (south) towards VALLEY RIVER CTR MALL/EUGENE for 1.8 miles.
6: As you pass the VALLEY RIVER CENTER Mall, stay in left lane and merge left onto exit for I-105 E/OR-126 E and stay on road for 0.8 miles.
7: Take exit #2 for COUNTRY CLUB RD. for 0.2 miles and stay in middle lane.
8: Proceed staight (east) for .1 miles to stop sign at corner of COBURG ROAD next to car dealership.
9: Turn RIGHT onto COBURG RD (south), and stay in left lane and go .7 miles over Ferry Street Bridge and past exits for 6th & 8th Streets (STAY IN LEFT LANE).
10: COBURG RD will fork to the left down a ramp and road will curve several times in next 1.25-1.5 miles as it skirts downtown and traces the north edge of campus.
11: At stoplight for AGATE STREET on east edge of campus, take a right (south) for .3 miles.

- Take Interstate 5 South from Portland and follow directions from above starting with step 4 (Beltline exit - and Delta Highway is 4-5 miles away)

- Take Interstate 5 North from Roseburg and take exit 192 for Highway 99 (only goes west). Go 3/4-mile north on Franklin Street to stoplight at Agate Street and take left (south) on edge of campus. Go 3 blocks south on Agate, and Hayward Field is at the corner of 15th and Agate.
Facility Information
The 400-meter track consists of eight 48-inch lanes with 85-meter straight-aways and 115-meter curves. Track resurfaced in September of 2004.
Steeplechase water jump has an inside location with the same surface as the track. Barrier height for the men is 36 inches. Barrier height for the women is 30 inches. The length of the water jump is 12 feet for both men and women.
All field events are contested on the stadium infield for the best spectator viewing with the exception of the hammer.
Hammer Throw is contested on a spacious nearby field adjacent to the south of the stadium. The hammer has its own seating area with viewing also possible from the west grandstands.
High Jump has a 25-meter octagon shaped approach that allows for jumping from any direction. The horizontal jumps are staged on single runways along the east and west straight-aways with the capability of jumping in the north and south directions.
Long Jump / Triple Jump competitions are held on north-south runways on both sides of the track. The long jump is usually on the west and the triple jump on the east. The distances between the boards and pits are 3.66 meters (12-0) for the long jump, 10.36 meters (34-0) for the women's triple jump and 12.80 meters (42-0) for the men's triple jump.
