Young, Fleming & Jordan Go Top Four in Pac-10 Dec/Hep

LOS ANGELES - Two pairs of Duck women and men scored top-eight finishes Sunday in final day action in the Pacific-10 Conference Championships heptathlon and decathlon, held under sunny, breezy and 80-degree conditions at UCLA’s Drake Stadium.
Overall in the team standings after one men’s event, Oregon leads with 13 points, ahead of Washington State (second, 10), California (third, 6), Stanford (fourth, 4), Arizona (fifth, 3), UCLA (sixth, 2) and Arizona State (seventh, 1). On the women’s side, Oregon is tied for second with California with six points, behind WSU (first, 20 points) and ahead of UCLA (fourth, 4) and Washington (fifth, 3).
Junior Lauryn Jordan paced the UO women with a 279-point personal best in her Pac-10 hep debut (fourth, 5,299). Redshirt junior Roslyn Lundeen added a point to the Ducks’ scoring column with her 452-point personal best and eighth-place finish (4,935) in her collegiate debut.
Overall in the seven-event competition, Washington State’s Julie Pickler climbed two spots on the final day to win (5,569) and edge twin sister Julie Pickler by six points (second, 5,563), and both also topped the NCAA automatic mark of 5,500 points. Cal’s Brooke Meredith finished third (5,446 points), followed by Jordan, UCLA’s Nastassja Hall (fifth, PR 5,224), Washington’s Grace Vela (sixth, 5,092), WSU’s Katie Miller (seventh, PR 5,000) and Lundeen.
In individual events Sunday, Jordan opened with two fouls in the long jump before she cleared 18-2 1/2 (w:1.1) on her third try. She ended the day with personal bests in the javelin (121-5) and 800 (2:33.51).
Lundeen led the javelin standings by 20 feet, six inches with her daily best of 159-0 on her second effort. The Victoria, B.C. native added second day marks of 17-4 1/4 (w:0.6) in the long jump and 2:21.02 in the 800.
“Anytime you get a lifetime best score and two PRs on the last day you should be happy,” Oregon assistant coach Rock Light said. “That score may get Lauryn into nationals, but we’ll have to see what happens around the country this weekend. She was ranked fifth in the Pac-10 coming in, so to improve on her seeding against one of the best conferences in the nation is very good. I was very pleased with Roslyn Lundeen’s performance, too. She came in dedicated to scoring for the team, and clawed for every point to get a big lifetime best.”
On the men’s side, juniors Andy Young and Cody Fleming took second and fourth with scores of 7,165 and 6,980 points, respectively.
Washington State’s Darion Powell ended Oregon’s four-year streak of decathlon wins with his NCAA automatic and personal best (first, 7,531). Other league scorers included Cal’s Jonas Hallgrimsson (third, 7,002), Stanford’s Nick Taylor (fifth, 6,832), Arizona’s Robert Arnold (sixth, 6,617), UCLA’s David Murphy (seventh, 5,606) and ASU’s Ryan Shler (eighth, 5,211).
Young wrapped up his day in the 1,500 with an 11-second win (4:28.22) after he paced Fleming for the first 1,200 meters, then ran a 41.8-second last 300. The Newberg, Ore., native opened the day with marks of 15.69 in the 110 hurdles (15.69, w:0.2), 124-9 in the discus, 16-2 3/4 in the pole vault and 160-6 in the javelin.
Fleming claimed decathlon bests in the final two events ? the javelin (184-8) and 1,500 (4:44.12) - to challenge Cal’s Hallgrimsson for the league bronze. The Sparks, Nevada native also ranked second in the afternoon’s third event, the discus (138-4), which came between his efforts in the 110 hurdles (16.91, w:1.2) and pole vault (13-3 1/2).
“Obviously we’re pleased that we picked up 13 points, and we’re in first place,” Oregon assistant coach Bill Lawson said. “I’m very glad that the guys kept their composure through some tenuous moments and challenging conditions. Andy still pole vaulted 16-3 in swirling winds that changed at different points along the runway. Cody competed really well down the stretch and had big personal bests in the javelin and 1,500. (WSU’s) Powell is an All-American and had a personal best today, so we have nothing to be ashamed of. Coming in, the best we thought could have done was 15 points, so I’m happy to end up with 13, and still have everybody healthy to come back to war next week.”
Powell led through all 10 disciplines en route to his first 10-event tally of ’05 after he no-heighted in the high jump earlier in the campaign in his season debut. The fourth-place NCAA finisher from 2003 almost no-heighted again Sunday in the pole vault and needed three attempts at his opening bar of 13-7 1/4 before he ultimately cleared a final height of 14-3 1/4. In other events Sunday, he posted the day’s top marks in the 110 hurdles (14.90, w: 1.2) and discus (153-8), and ranked second in the javelin (193-9).
Heading into the final day, Powell owned a half-way score of 3,889 points and led Arizona’s Robert Arnold (second, 3,728), Fleming (third, 3,669), Cal’s Jonas Hallgrimsson (fourth, 3,559) and Young (fifth, 3,549). Arnold, however, fouled all three of his discus attempts Sunday, and needed a lifetime PR in the pole vault to pull back into scoring contention.
Young’s top-two finish extended Oregon’s run of top-two decathlon finishes to six years straight under sixth-year Duck decathlon mentor Lawson. That stretch includes four straight Duck wins by Santiago Lorenzo (7,617, 2001; 7,564, 2003), Billy Pappas (7,532, 2002) and Tommy Skipper (7,589, 2004), while Lorenzo finished second in 2000 at Hayward Field behind eventual NCAA champion Bevan Hart of California.
Young scored for the third straight season in the Pac-10 decathlon after he took third in 2004 (PR 7,372) and fifth in 2003 (7,017). His season best and NCAA provisional score of 7,329 points from his Oregon Invite win two weeks ago ranked him 11th nationally last week and will likely earn a return to the NCAA Championships in Sacramento, Calif., Wed.-Sat., Jun 8-11. Last year he took 13th in his NCAA debut (7,302) - three spots higher than his pre-meet seed.
Complete results from Saturday and Sunday are available at the www.UCLAbruins and www.Pac-10.org website.
Looking ahead, the Duck track and field teams head to UCLA for the remainder of the Pacific-10 Conference Championships, next Sat.-Sun., May 14-15 at Drake Stadium near downtown Los Angeles.
A two-hour broadcast of the entire Pac-10 Championships event will be televised in the Pacific Northwest on Fox Sports Northwest on Sat., May 21 from noon ? 2 pm and on Tue., May 24 from 1-3 pm.
