Oregon Seniors, Freshmen Honored at Soccer Banquet

EUGENE, Ore. -- Record-setting senior Nicole Garbin was named Offensive MVP and fellow seniors Katie Abrahamson and Cristan Higa were also recognized at Oregon’s soccer banquet, held Sunday in the Stadium Club at Autzen.
Garbin scored a school-record 10 goals in 2005, seven of them game-winners, as Oregon forged just the second. 500 season in school history at 9-9-1. The Wailuku, Hawaii, native was a member of the all-Pac-10 second team. Garbin is appealing the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility due to medical hardship, a process that is expected to be completed next month.
Abrahamson, from West Linn, Ore., started all 19 games as a defender and was named the team’s Defensive MVP. Abrahamson scored two goals with two assists in 2005. Fellow team captain Higa was named Most Inspirational for both her senior leadership and for coming back to play despite a knee injury she suffered Oct. 7 at Arizona. The Diamond Bar, Calif., native scored two goals with one assist in 16 games in 2005.
Freshmen claimed the remaining awards. Jessie Chatfield was named Rookie of the Year following her school-record seven shutouts in 2005. The Eugene native and Churchill High graduate started all 19 games and had a 1.71 goals against average. She was named to the Pac-10’s all-freshman team. Portland’s Taylor Callan was the team’s Most Improved player. She appeared in 16 matches and made five starts, mainly in the second half of the season.
