Ducks Pounce on Pacific win 6-1
EUGENE, Ore. ? The Oregon women’s tennis team stormed through the University of the Pacific, Sunday morning at the Student Tennis Center, winning 6-1.
“It was good to see them come out and take care of business after an emotional match yesterday,” head coach Nils Schyllander said.
Oregon won two of three doubles matches to win the doubles point. Dominika Dieskova and Ceci Olivos, the No. 49 team in the nation fought through their match winning, 8-4 over Vana Mrazovic and Jolanta Twarowska. At number three the Ducks team of Carmen Seremeta and Anna Powaska built a 5-0 lead before holding on to win 8-2 against Clara Schuhmacher and Helen Schneider.
The Ducks lone doubles loss came in a tiebreaker, when the team of Carla Tamborini and Natalia Kostenko forced a 7-7 tie against Anna Leksinska and Claudia Hirt. The visiting duo won the tiebreak 7-2.
The first Duck off the court in singles play was Leksinska who rolled through her match winning a straight sets blow out 6-0, 6-0 over Schuhmacher.
“I was disappointed with my match yesterday and our doubles play today,” Leksinska said. “There is nothing better than a double bagel to make me feel better about myself.”
Leksinska was quickly joined in victory by Monica Hoz de Vila, who dispatched Schneider, 6-1, 6-0.
Olivos quickly brushed aside Tamborini winning the first set 6-4. Olivos was dominant in the second as she won, 6-0 to take the match. Seremeta was the next Duck to finish her match as she defeated Twarowska, 7-5, 6-0.
Dieskova, currently ranked 26th nationally, also won in straight sets as she defeated Vana Mrazovic, 6-3, 6-1.
The only Duck singles player to lose a match was Powaska at number two. Powaska fought gamely but was unable to get past Natalia Kostenko, falling 6-4, 6-3.
The Ducks return to action Friday when they face Long Beach State beginning at 1 p.m.
