Indoor Track Season Heats Up With MPSF Champs in Seattle

EUGENE, Ore. ? In their fifth weekend of indoor track and field action, the University of Oregon men’s and women’s teams look forward to their busiest weekend of the winter slate in the Mountain Pacific Championships, hosted Friday-Saturday, Feb. 24-25, by the University of Washington in the Dempsey Indoor Center.
The Ducks have tentatively entered 19 women’s and 27 men’s sprinters, distance runners, jumpers and throwers in the quasi-conference championships that also includes teams from the Pac-10 (Arizona, Arizona State, California, Stanford, Oregon, UCLA, Washington and Washington State) and Big West Conferences (Cal Poly, UC Irvine and Long Beach State).
Friday's combined events kick off first day action at 11:15 am. Individual field event action follows at 2 pm, and the first running event starts at 2:50 pm. Friday’s final event will end at approximately 7 pm.
On Saturday, the first combined event begins at 10 am, and the first individual field event follows at 11 am. Running events start at noon, and the final event ends at 3:15 pm.
A complete schedule is posted at the end of this release, and more meet information is available at the www.GoHuskies.com website at the http://gohuskies.collegesports.com/sports/c-track/spec-rel/05-mpsf-home.html URL link.
Two Duck men’s All-Americans enter their events as top seeds this weekend ? senior Eric Mitchum (60-meter hurdles, 7.78) and junior Tommy Skipper (pole vault, 18-0 1/2).
Other UO men's entries ranked top-six in their events include senior Richard Del Rincon (200 meters, fourth, 21.40), sophomore Michael McGrath (800 meters, sixth, 1:51.61), freshman Galen Rupp (5,000 meters, fourth, 14:17.24), redshirt senior Jonathan Derby (pole vault, sixth, 17-0.75), redshirt junior Colin Veldman (weight throw, second, 60-3 3/4), freshman Matthew Maloney (weight throw, fifth, 55-1), and the 4x400-meter relay (fifth, 3:16.53) and distance medley relay (sixth, 9:49.38).
On the women’s side, featured Duck athletes hail from the weight throw, pentathlon and distance areas.
Senior Lauryn Jordan will make her pentathlon season debut for UO and already ranks second all-time with her 2005 best (3,894). Redshirt freshman teammate Kalindra McFadden is seeded fourth with her season best and NCAA provisional mark from her collegiate debut (3,850) ? a mark that ranks her third all-time for UO. Jordan may also make season debut in the high jump and her personal best from ’05 (5-8) ranks her fourth all-time for UO, and is seeded in sixth in the triple jump (39-8 3/4).
In the throws, junior and senior Britney Henry and Brittany Hinchcliffe stand fourth and fifth in the weight throw, respectively (61-0 3/4 / 59-7) with season bests that are both better than the preseason school record of 59-9 set by Hinchcliffe last season. Freshman Megan Maloney follows as the event’s seventh seed, and her season best of 55-8.5 is only two inches from UO’s all-time indoor top-five list.
The UO women’s distance area also features several highly-ranked entries, including the following top-six-ranked seeds ? freshman Rebekah Noble (800, first, 2:04.72), senior Sara Schaaf (800, sixth, 2:09.88), junior Dana Buchanan (mile, fourth, 4:46.71), redshirt senior Amber McGown (3,000 meters, sixth, 9:32.57), and the distance medley relay (second, 11:22.81). During the season, Noble and Schaaf ran on the fifth-ranked 4x400 relay that owns a season best of 3:47.92.
In last year's championships also held in Seattle, the Duck men and women took fifth and eighth with 65 and 42 points, respectively. UO men's champions from ’05 included Richard Del Rincon (60, 6.74), Eric Mitchum (60 hurdles, 7.81), the 4x400 relay (3:06.98) and Leonidas Watson (long jump, 25-11). The Oregon featured wins by Magdalena Sandoval (5,000, 16:41.21), and other top-four finishes from the 4x400 relay (third, 3:44.74), distance medley relay (second, 11:27.77), Brittany Hinchcliffe (weight throw, fourth, 59-5) and Lauryn Jordan (fourth, 3,894).
After this weekend, the collegiate season hits the homestretch with one weekend of qualifying on Fri.-Sat., March 5-6. Afterwards, the NCAA Indoor Championships make their seventh straight appearance at the University of Arkansas’ Randal A. Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark., on Fri.-Sat., March 10-11.
