Wenslow & Timpani Lead UO in Women's Golf Spring Opener

FRESNO, Calif. ? The No. 29-ranked University of Oregon women’s golf team opened their spring season Monday in the Kitahara Fresno State Invitational, and stood sixth with a first-round score of 302 at Copper River Country Club in Fresno, Calif.

Sophomore Victoria Wenslow paced the Ducks with a par 72 score on the 6,004-yard course, and was tied for fifth overall. Wenslow’s score was her third round of 73 strokes or better in her last five rounds dating back to the fall’s final tournaments ? the Las Vegas Founders Collegiate (73 first round) and the Stanford Pepsi Intercollegiate (72 final round).

Senior Michelle Timpani returned to the lineup for the first time since the 2005 NCAA West Regional, nine months ago and ranked second for UO Monday (32^nd-tie, 76). Other Duck scorers included freshman Cathryn Bristow and senior Erin Andrews (44^th-tie, 77), while redshirt junior Therese Wenslow stood fifth on the team (81^st-tie, 82).

“Today was a good start,” head coach Shannon Rouillard said. “Our scores were OK considering it rained most of the way, and the winds were strong at times. Michelle’s 76 was exciting. She hasn’t competed in a while because of some injuries, so for her to come in and shoot a 76 in her first round is a big confidence builder that she can build off tomorrow. Victoria’s 72 out of the gate was also great. We’ve been working on her lag-putting in practice, and it was paying off today, and she was also hitting pretty close to the pin. Our number one and two players heading in ? Cathryn and Therese ? didn’t quite play to the level they know they can play at, and I have no doubts that they’ll be back up there tomorrow.”

Overall in the 19-team field, UC Irvine paced the team leaderboard by nine strokes with their 285, and was followed by No. 43 New Mexico State (second, 294), No. 25 Long Beach State (third, 296), Sacramento State (fourth, 299), San Jose State (fifth, 300) and No. 29 Oregon (sixth, 302).

Other teams in the field included Oregon State (seventh, 303), UC Davis (eighth, 304), Fresno State (ninth, 305), Colorado State (10^th-tie, 307), Idaho (10^th-tie, 307), No. 41 Denver (12^th, 309), Nevada (13^th, 310), Hawai’i (14^th, 311), San Diego State (15^th, 316), San Francisco (16^th-tie, 317), Boise State (16^th-tie, 317), Colorado (18^th, 318) and Cal Poly (19^th, 320).

Individually, UC Irvine sported three players in the top 10, including first day leader Selanee’ Henderson (34-33-67). New Mexico State’s Lehua Wise followed three strokes back in second place (34-36-70), and was one stroke ahead of Angela Won of UC Irvine (third-tie, 36-35-72) and Jennifer Parkes (third-tie, 37-34-71)

The two-round tournament will feature a second 18-hole round on Tuesday, and tee times start at 8 a.m.
