Ducks Drop Second Match of Day in Davis
DAVIS, Calif. ? The Oregon wrestling team lost its second close match of the day falling 21-19 to UC Davis Friday night after an earlier 22-15 loss to Stanford.
With the loss the Ducks fall to 6-6 overall and 4-5 in the Pac-10.
“We were missing two starters today and that hurt us,” head coach Chuck Kearney said. “When you have starters out of the lineup and you have to shuffle things it can create some matchup problems for you.”
The Ducks split the 10 weight classes with the Aggies getting wins at 125, 165, 174, 184 and the heavyweight class.
Ryan Dunn got his second win of the day for the Ducks as he notched a major decision victory over Marcos Orozco, 21-8.
“Ryan continues to wrestle hard and to wrestle well,” Kearney said. “He stepped up to 133 earlier in the day and did a great job and he did another great job tonight.”
At 133 Beau Malia was on the wrong end of a major decision falling, 17-9, to Omar Gaitan.
Skyler Woods also suffered a major decision loss as he was on the short end of a 12-1 bout with Derek Moore.
At 149 Jesse Padilla pinned Stewart Bogart at 1:25 of the match. Padilla’s Aggie teammate, Dustin Noack followed that with a 12-3 major decision over Jeremy McLaughlin at 157.
“Jeremy wrestled as well as he could after moving up to 157 but he just was outsized,” Kearney said.
At 165 Joey Bracamonte edged Jon Clark in a 6-4 decision. The victory gave the sixth-ranked Bracamonte a split on the day as he lost his earlier match against Stanford’s Ray Blake.
Chet McBee came away with a walkover victory as he won his match by forfeit. At 184 Shane Webster won a 10-5 decision against Tyler Bernacchi. Tony Rolen was less fortunate at 197 as he suffered a 4-0 shutout loss to Eliot Kelly.
In the heavyweight division Chris Dearmon won a 10-4 decision over Evan Hendrix but it wasn’t quite enough as the Aggies held on to win a close one, 21-19.
The Ducks return to action when they face Oregon State, Feb. 10, at McArthur Court.
