Duck Pair Wins Again, Head for Quarterfinals

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. ? The University of Oregon has two wrestlers in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Wrestling Championships as seniors Joey Bracamonte and Shane Webster both survived and advanced into the quarterfinal round.
Bracamonte (165) won his second round match at the NCAA Wrestling Championship Tournament. He tangled in his match against Larry Hall of West Virginia. Bracamonte was able to score a takedown and use riding time as well as an escape to put together five points and win, 5-2.
“Joey wrestled a very controlled match,” Kearney said. “He controlled the action from the start to the finish and is psychologically in a great state of mind for this tournament.”
Bracamonte advances to the quarterfinal tomorrow morning where he will face Northern Illinois’s Johnny Galloway.
Webster (184) was back in action after his morning defeat of Lehigh’s Dave Helfrich as he squared off with Hofstra’s Joseph Rovelli, who advanced after a defeat of Northwestern’s Mike Tamillow, upsetting the No. 12 seed with a, 10-6, decision.
Webster looked as strong in his second match as he did in morning action as he rolled to a, 17-7, victory over Rovelli. Webster had nearly two minutes of riding time in the match as he put Rovelli on the mat and kept him down, as he scored his points.
“Shane wrestled a Webster-like match scoring a ton of takedowns and treating his opponent to a lopsided defeat,” Kearney said. “He is focused and is doing what he has to do to continue advancing in the tournament.”
Webster will advance to tomorrow morning’s quarterfinals as well and will face Cornell’s Joe Mazzurco.
“Tomorrow morning’s matches are big matches if they win they will be guaranteed of a national place, a top-six or better finish,” Kearney said.
