Pac-10 Champs Day 1 Races in Review

EUGENE - Included are detailed races in review from Saturday's opening day races, compiled by Tom Heinonen, Kevin Sully and Jacob Swinn, while the live results link to the right in the ARTICLE LINKS box for field events will include entire field series.

Men’s 4x100 Meter Relay (Prelims) ?
No prelim, straight to final.
Women’s 4x100 Meter Relay (Prelims) ?
Heat2 Stanford and UCLA even after first exchange. Still even after second exchange, ASU drops the baton. Stanford with easy win over UCLA and WSU is third, ASU does not finish. Stanford wins in 44.63, so only 7 teams will go to the final with ASU DNF and Arizona DQ.
Men’s 1,500 Meters (Prelims) ?
23 runners total, 2 heats. Heat 1. Babiszkiewiecz out in front early. Haddan takes the lead around the first curve. Followed by Brown and Babiszkiewiecz. Abbott in fourth. 400 in 60.1 with Haddan in front. Brown in second then Babiszkiewiecz and Abbott. Pack is surprisingly long for 60 second first lap. As they approach 2 laps to go the pack starts to bunch up as Haddan still leads. 800 in 2:03.7 and now they are all together and slowing down. Brown eases into the lead with Steier on his shoulder. Heat 2. Women’s 1,500 Meters (Prelims) ? Heat 1 McLaughlin and Ellison float to the lead. Lambie and Amanda Trotter in 3rd and 4th. The pace looks slow. 400 meters in 71.7. 900 meters to go, nothing has change. Pack stays the same. Lambie moves into second as they approach 800. 800 in 2:27.6. McLaughlin in front, Lambie, Ellison. It is slowing down even more with 600 to go. The pack bunches up. Chapa is buried on the inside. Lambie to the front at the bell with Timinsky and Trotter. Heat 2 Edwards of Arizona takes the lead and McGowan is on her shoulder at 200 meters. Noble floats on the poll in midpack. 400 in 70.9 for Edwards. McGowan in second still. Cabrera in third and Kingma of ASU in fourth. 2 laps to go, McGowan is ready to move and she takes the lead before 800 meters. 800 in 2:24.7 for McGowan, Noble floating in the pack. 6 in the main pack at the bell. Men’s 110 Meter Hurdles (Prelims) ?
Heat 1
Gallimore gets out well, but Mitchum dominates from the 3rd hurdle and wins. Ikwuakor storms up for second ahead of Cook, who appears to strain his left quad at the finish, and Gallimore who was fourth. Mitchum runs a 13.71 and the wind is +2.9.
Heat 2
Frazier and Craddock jump to the early lead. Craddock leads over the 9th hurdle and wins in 14.05. Profit closes strongly for third in 14.38. Wind is +3.4.
Heat 3
Hunter of Arizona has scratched. Thurmond of Oregon with the early lead, but hits the third hurdle and falls back to last. Kelley wins in 14.12. Wind is 2.4 .
Women’s 100 Meter Hurdles (Prelims) ?
Lodree out to a fast start. By mid race it is clearly Davis and Lodree who blitz the field in 13.15 and 13.21. The wind is +1.3. Whitlock finishes in 13.43 and is on the bubble. Omwanghe in 13.65 for fourth. Heat 2 Harper flinched at the start and Powell, next to her, got out last probably anticipating a false start. Powell blew by at mid race and wins easily at 13.19. The wind was +1.0. Harper is second in 13.38 Jackie Johnson a strong third in 13.46 and Diana Pickler fourth in 13.69. Pickler’s jammed ankle, which held her out of the heptathlon, must be much improved.
Men’s 400 Meters (Prelims) ?
Heat 1
Garrison in the lead with 200 meters to go, as Everhart floats down the back straight, then starts running hard with 150 to go. Everhart takes control down the stretch with Garrison in tow. Everhart wins in 46.72, Garrison second in 46.94. Solis in third in a season best 47.23.
Heat 2
This heat has a full 8 lanes. Larry, Scherer, and Jones running strongly through 200. Larry leads with 130 to go. It is Scherer with 100 to go. Scherer powers through the line in a season best 45.80. Larry relaxes in a 46.30 for second. Jones is third in 47.16.
Women’s 400 Meters (Prelims) ?
Heat 1
Johnson down the back straight in front. Bayne on the outside is running easily with a huge wrap on her right thigh. Bayne edges by Johnson down the straightaway and wins. Williams of ASU gets third in 55.06. Bayne runs 54.41 and Johnson runs 54.55. Bayne did not appear to run hard, but after the race seems to be favoring her right leg which is heavily wrapped.
Heat 2
Leach jumps to the lead in the first 100 meters and storms down the back straight. She is 15 meters ahead with 200 meters to go. She continues to press off the Bowerman curve. Dignam is second, far ahead of the field. Canda-Probasco edges past Worthen for third in 55.70. Leach wins in 52.52. Dignam second in 54.38.
Heat 3
Hardeman is in the lead at 200 as Gaines from Stanford fades a little and Wallace of ASU moves up. Off the final curve it is Hardeman and now Wallace storms by to win in 53.95. Hardeman second in 54.43. Turner third in 54.76. Gaines up for fourth in 55.06 perhaps a tie for the last spot in the finals with Williams of ASU from heat 1; if so officials will read the photos to .001 to determine the final eight.
Heat 1 Del Rincon upsets Francis in 10.34. The wind is +1.2. Robertson is third in 10.38 Love is fourth in 10.51. Heat 2 Great start for Jones of USC. Peterson almost catches him at the tape. Jones wins in 10.40. Peterson, 10.43. Stanback a
Women’s 100 Meters (Prelims) ?
Heat 1
Janice Davis of Stanford jumps to an early lead and holds it for 60 meters before Powell of USC edges by to win in 11.26.
Heat 2
Carter of Cal on the inside and Martin of Arizona on the outside get out well. Rodriguez far behind early, but blows through the field to win in 11.39 with a +2.7 wind. Bailey of Stanford is second in 11.39. Martin third in 11.51 and Carter fourth in 11.53. Lodree was far back and appeared to be shaking out her left hamstring after the race. The final appears to be the top four out of each heat.

Chambers of WSU to the early lead. At 200 McClary of

Only 4 runners in this race, Chapa of Stanford is a scratch. Solomon of USC in the front, off the curve followed by Cunningham of USC and Munguia of UCLA. 53.68 at the bell for the group of three. Nothing changes down the back straight, 3 runners for 2 spots. 1:21.3 at 600, Munguia tries for the lead but Solomon holds him off. Solomon wins in 1:49.77. Cunningham runs Munguia out to lane four, but Munguia edges to get the second spot in 1:50.00. Cunningham runs 1:50.87 for third.
Heat 3
Garcia of Stanford to the front. Lee of Cal leading at 200 at 27.7. McGrath of Oregon in 3rd with Brown of UWon his shoulder. Lee forces the pace through the bell with Garcia in tow in 54.41 at 400. Garcia takes the lead down the back straight and there are 5 runners together. 600 1:23.4, Garcia in lead off the Bowerman curve, Brown challenges on the outside and so does Abbott. Brown and Abbott ease across the line and McGrah outleans Garcia for third in 1:51.16. Brown runs 1:50.85, Abbott in 1:50.87. It appears that McGrath got the last spot.
Women’s 800 Meters (Prelims) ?
Freeman of Stanford to the lead. Offor of Stanford joins her at 200 in 30.1. 400 at 60.8. Freemon in the lead, 2 Stanford runners(Follmar and Offor) collide after the bell and it knocks Offor out of the race. At 600 it is Freeman, Johnson of Cal, Follmar of Stanford and Miller of UW. Johnson looks over both shoulders down the home straight cruising in second as Freeman wins and Follmar finishes third. Freeman runs 2:08.24, Johnson 2:09.49 for second. Men’s 400 Meter Hurdles (Prelims) ?
McCary of UW out really hard down the back straight. Ikwaukor of Oregon in second but has a bad fifth hurdle. McCary leads over the 7th and 8th hurdles. McCary fading over 10th hurdle and USC’s Kelley goes past to win in 51.84. Ikwaukor edges McCary 52.23 to 52.27.
Heat 2
Hansen from Cal and Cassleman of WSU lead down the back straight. Huske of Oregon charges to the lead over 7th hurdle. Huske, Mitchum and Cassleman together over the 8th hurdle. Mitchum of
Heat 3
Charles of UW goes immediately to the lead and has complete control down the back straight. Session of UCLA is in second around the curve. Charles all alone and ASU’s Profit moves into second. Charles wins easily in 51.15, Profit gets second in 52.41 and Session gets a non-qualifying third in 53.54.
Women’s 400 Meter Hurdles (Prelims) ?
Heat 1
Harris running strong for UCLA in the middle of the track and is leading at 200. Then, Wallace of ASU takes the lead. Santana running strong through the 7th hurdle. Wallace all alone in the lead over the ninth and tenth hurdles. Harris hangs on over Santana for 2nd. Wallace in 58.62, Harris in 61.94 and Santana gets 3rd in 62.20.
Heat 2
Hill of UCLA leads over the second hurdle. Omwanghe of Cal is in second at 200, but Harwood of UO moves hard around the curve. Hill leads over the 8th hurdle, but here comes Harwood, at the finish it is Hill, Harwood and Omwanghe. Hill wins in 59.76, Harwood a PR 59.84 and Omwanghe third in 60.34, a lock for one of the time qualifiers.
Heat 3
Leach of UCLA gets the immediate lead and Stewart of USC is second. Leach with a giant sized lead with 150 to go and Stewart is clear in second. Trane of WSU rushes up to pass Stewart over the 10th hurdle and gets second in 61.07. Leach runs 58.04, Stewart is relegated to 3rd in 61.85, a non-qualifier.
Men’s 200 Meters (Prelims) ?
Robertson from WSU gets a great start and is in the early lead. Off the curve Francis of USC moves into the lead. Scherer of Oregon makes a late run and crosses the finish line second and looking over both shoulders. Francis runs 20.74, Scherer 20.89 and WSU’s Woods runs a 21.15. Heat2 Del Rincon of
Women’s 200 Meters (Prelims) ?
Heat 1
Davis of Stanford leads every step and cruises to a win in 23.31, a season best. Diego of UCLA runs a great straightaway to get a comfortable second in 23.53. Stanford’s Bailey is third in 24.01.
Heat 2
Rodriguez of USC gets the lead off the curve and doesn’t relinquish to win in 23.10. The wind is +1.5. Johnson of Cal and Onyepunuka of USC battle for second and Onyepunuka gets the nod, both in 23.82
Heat 3
Taylor of Arizona gets a fast start, Carter of Cal challenges down the straightaway, but
The track is 20% in the shade as the runners begin. UCLA’s Ramos takes the early and is looking over his shoulder. They jog through 200 in 39 seconds. Cheseret ran an astonishing 1500 meter prelim today, falling and getting up, standing, jogging reluctantly then making up 40 meters on the field to qualify easily. 79 seconds for the first lap. Sayenko of UW leads through 800 in 2:38. Cheseret in second at 1k in 3:16.6. The pack is all together. 1200 in a remarkably slow Mile 2 42 second 200 to start the second mile. 2000 meters with Sayenko ahead in Mile 3 Mandi, Cheseret and Rupp lead the field. 9 laps (3600) in 11:40.4 a 71.5 second lap. Araia, Gotcher, Cheseret and Rupp followed by Mix and Burchill of ASU 20 meters back as they approach 8 laps to go. Rupp takes the lead
Last 5 Laps
Burchill gets dropped by the chase pack (Gotcher and Mix). 4 laps to go a 72.5 last lap, 26:08 with 1 mile to go. Rupp surges down the back straight. Araia and Cheseret don’t seem fazed. With 3 laps to go the group of three is in still intact. 68.6 last lap. Rupp starts to jog around the curve. Burchill looks vulnerable to the group of six. Mix and Gotcher alone in 4th and 5th, 100 meters back of Rupp, Cheseret and Araia. Araia to the front with 2 laps to go, Cheseret gives chase, a 71.7 to finish that lap. Araia and Cheseret break away from Rupp easily, but here comes Rupp again. Cheseret makes a big move with 600 to go and the race for first looks like it is over. Rupp passes Araia with 500 to go. Cheseret passes the bell with a 60.6 last lap. 29:29. First, second and third seem to be decided. With 200 to go Cheseret has a 40 meter lead on Rupp who has a 30 meter lead on Araia in third. Cheseret eases down the home straight, waving to the crowd, to finish in 62.1. Rupp eases in as well and waves and smiles at the crowd. Araia thrashes the last few meters for third. Gotcher and Mix finish 4th and 5th. Werhane finishes with a wild sprint to get 9th. Cheseret runs a 30:32, Rupp, 30:42, Araia, 30:47, Gotcher 31:03, Mix 31:05, Sayenko 31:11. Ramos 31:11 and Burchill 31:19.
Women’s 10,000 Meters (FINAL) ?
Tyler of UW breaks to the lead after a 91.1 second first lap and nobody goes with her.

Nelson of Oregon and Rios of ASU lead the chase pack with Youce of OSU tucked in behind. The leaders have dropped

Rios breaks away from Younce and Nelson tries to go with McGregor. With 8 laps to go, the ASU runners have 50 meter lead over Trotter.
Last 5 Laps
McGregor has finally dropped Nelson, who has been passed by Pearson as the two leaders lap them. 4 laps to go, 28:43, an 80.8 lap. Pearson is closing the gap on McGregor and is looking strong. Rios is in 4th by herself with Younce 60 meters back. McGregor and Pearson follow. 3 laps to go for the leaders.
