PROVO, Utah ? Junior Tommy Skipper and freshman Rachel Yurkovich paced the University of Oregon track and field teams in first day action Friday in the NCAA West Regional Championships at Clarence E. Robison Track on the Brigham Young University campus.
Yurkovich opened the women’s javelin competition with a throw of 161-8 that led the field for most of the meet until Fresno State junior Mallory Webb improved more than four feet on her final throw to finish as the runner-up (163-3).
Luckily for Yurkovich she had also improved the previous series on her fifth throw with her daily best (165-7), and her series follows ? 161-5 (49.28m), 159-11 (48.47m), 151-1 (45.75m), 165-7 (50.48m) and 156-9 (47.79m).
Friday’s best was the seventh time in as many meets she’s topped 160 feet in 2006, and Friday’s daily best was her fourth-best of the season behind her winning throws in the Oregon Preview (179-10), Trojan Invitational (174-0) and Pac-10 Championships (166-3).
“This was my first regional meet, so I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect,” Yurkovich said. “Coming in, I was focused on all the normal list of technical things, but after a while I decided to focus on just throwing. Towards the end I suggested to Lance (Deal, assistant coach) that maybe I should shorten my approach, and he agreed. I used a seven-step on my last few throws and got my best one off it, so it worked out. It felt a little different to be away from Hayward Field since we’ve been at home most of the season, so I had to try and get up for it in a different way, which was good since NCAA’s aren’t at Hayward Field - although it would be awesome if they were.”
The Newberg, Ore., native entered the meet ranked fifth nationally and now looks forward to the NCAA Championships, Wed.-Sat., June 7-10 at Sacramento State, since she finished top-five in her regional event final.
Yurkovich also became the third straight Duck to win the West Regional title after returning NCAA runner-up Sarah Malone claimed top honors in 2005 (186-10 ? Hayward Field record) and 2004 (173-10).
Also in the javelin Friday, fellow frosh Ashley McCrea upped her season best by 5 feet, 9 inches to 156-8 to finish seventh in her regional debut ? nine places better than her seeding that was based on her prior season best of 150-11.
Also in the javelin, redshirt seniors Roslyn Lundeen and Elisa Reynoso made their third regional appearances and placed 15th (143-5) and 22nd (135-4).
In the long jump final, senior Lauryn Jordan also earned an NCAA invitation with her fourth-place finish (20-10 1/2). The Stockton, Calif., native was only 3/4 of an inch off her personal best (20-10 1/4) from April ? a mark that ranks her second all-time for UO behind school record holder Julie Goodrich (21-0 1/2, 1988).
In the final women’s event Friday evening, the 5,000 meters, the Duck duo of freshman Zoe Nelson (seventh, 17:30.33) and sophomore Sarah Pearson (14th, 17:53.01) successfully navigated the 12 1/2-lap distance at Provo’s 4,553-feet elevation. Zoe and Pearson were seeded 16th and 17th coming into the meet with their season and personal bests of 16:50.60 and 16:50.64, respectively.
In qualifying action in the 800 meters, freshman Rebekah Noble (second, 2:08.23) and redshirt senior Sara Schaaf (third, 2:08.25) easily advanced to Saturday’s final after they went 1-2 in the second of two preliminary heats, while Stanford junior Ashley Freeman won the first heat (2:07.69). Schaaf’s mark was just off her season best (2:07.81) and her personal best from 2005 (2:06.91).
On the men’s side, Skipper took second in the pole vault final (second, 18-1) behind another former NCAA champion Robison Pratt of BYU (first, 18-4 3/4). Skipper opened his day with first attempt clearances at 17-5 and 17-9, then cleared 18-1 on his second attempt before missing his three attempts at 18-4 3/4 with his final attempt a near-conversion.
Pratt, the 2005 NCAA outdoor champion and returning regional victor, needed three attempts to clear his first bar (17-5), then passed at 17-9, then required three more attempts at both 18-1 and 18-4 3/4, before he finally missed three consecutive tries at a new personal best of 18-9 1/2.
“The conditions today were great,” Skipper said. “We had a great tailwind, the temperature was great, and the field is really talented. I’m still getting my timing down on my nine-step approach, and I’m making progress. I’m looking forward to expecting even more comfortable in the next few practices leading up to NCAAs.”
Skipper’s mark Friday was his second-highest of the year after he cleared 19-0 to open the season in March and win the Oregon Preview. The Sandy, Ore., native also won his other outdoor competitions, the Pac-10 Championships two weeks ago in Eugene (18-0 1/2) ? his second league crown in three appearances.
Also in the field on the men’s side Friday, redshirt juniore Colin Veldman placed ninth in the hammer (195-4) and may receive an at-large bid next Tuesday when the NCAA Championships announces its field. Veldman entered the meet ranked 19th nationally before this weekend with his season best of 210-8 from the Oregon Invitational ? a mark that also ranks him eighth all-time for UO.
The Fort Collins, Colo., native also competed in the discus final Friday (13th, 180-1), and was only 1 foot, 11 inches off his season best from the Oregon Invitational (182-0).
On the track, sophomore and returning NCAA 10,000m runner-up Galen Rupp earned his first NCAA invitation in the outdoor 5,000 meters with his third-place finish (14:28.83), and trailed Arizona senior Robert Cheseret (first, 14:25.32) and junior Obed Mutanya (second, 14:25.45).
Rupp ran among the leaders the entire way, and took the lead for more than a lap with two miles to go in the 3.1-mile race, then settled back behind the Wildcat duo as the trio ran alone the final half of the race.
In preliminary action earlier Friday, several Duck men advanced to Saturday’s finales included seniors Matt Scherer (400m, second, 45.73), redshirt sophomore Michael McGrath (1,500m, 10th, 3:51.51). Akobundu Ikwuakor (400m hurdles, fifth, 50.69), redshirt junior Jordan Kent (200m, third, 20.56W, w:5.9), the men’s 4x100-meter relay of freshman Jared Huske, Scherer, freshman Derrick Jones and Kent (third, 39.86).
Among those men’s qualifying efforts:
- Kent’s 200m mark was a wind-aided personal best (his previous windy best was 20.82w).
- Ikuawkor’s 400m hurdle time was only .08 seconds off his personal best (50.61) that ranks him eighth all-time for UO.
- The 4x100m relay utilized Huske on the opening leg for the first time this season as a replacement for senior Richard Del Rincon, and the quartet’s time (39.86) was only .12 seconds off their season best that won the Pac-10 Championships two weekends ago (UO #10 all-time 39.74).
The Ducks return for second and final day action Saturday, and the meet starts 10 a.m., with the women’s hammer, the first running event is 1:30 p.m., and the final event ends at 5:30 p.m.
“We approached this meet as a qualifying round for the NCAA’s,” Oregon director of track and field Vin Lananna said, “so there is no second day if you don’t get it done the first day, just like Sacramento. On the men’s side, the 4x100m relay did a great job, and all of our sprinters did what they needed. On the women’s side it was much the same and we had good performances across the board. Rebekah (Noble) and Sara (Schaaf) particularly looked good in the 800 qualifying, while Rachel (Yurkovich) continues to perform great. She’s been at a high level this whole season and has great composure for a freshman. Sometimes the conditions in the javelin can be challenging, and she never seems to be affected.”
