Track & Field Lands 20 Pac-10 All-Academic Honors
WALNUT CREEK, Calif., -- The Pacific-10 Conference announced Wednesday that 20 University of Oregon men’s and women’s track and field student-athletes (12 W, 8 M) were selected to its annual all-academic teams, according to Commissioner Tom Hansen.
The UO women tied for second among first-team honorees (3) behind Oregon State (5) and featured another second-team selection and eight honorable mention picks. The Duck men tied for first among first-team honorees (4) with Arizona State and Washington, and also claimed four more honorable mention choices.
On the Oregon women’s side, seniors and NCAA veterans Roslyn Lundeen and Hannah Moore and sophomore Sarah Pearson were selected to the first team, and another senior and All-America javelin thrower Elisa Reynoso was tabbed to the second team.
Lundeen received her third first-team honor after similar awards in 2003 and ’05. Moore was a two-time second-team pick (2003, ’05) and Reynoso was a second-team selection in ’05 and an honorable mention in 03.
UO women selected to the honorable mention squad included five recent NCAA qualifiers and/or All-Americans – seniors Brittany Hinchcliffe and Sara Schaaf, junior Emily Enders, sophomores Kasey Harwood and Irie Searcy - and sophomores Ashley Bridenbeck and Amanda Santana.
Historically on the women’s side, the Duck women have claimed three or more first-team honorees 10 times since 1991, including a school record five on five occasions (1991, ’93, ’95, ’98, ’03)
On the men’s side in ’05, Duck men’s first-team honorees included four recent NCAA qualifiers - seniors Matt Scherer and Andrew Young and sophomores Michael McGrath and Galen Rupp.
Young claimed his fourth straight Pac-10 first-team honor and Scherer was also a first-team selection in 2004 and ‘05. Both Duck seniors were ESPN Magazine Academic All-Americans in ’05 and were second- and third-team selections, respectively.
Four Duck men that have also scored top-eight Pac-10 finishes athletically were picked to the men’s all-academic honorable mention rolls – redshirt juniors Brian Bartow, Jordan Kent and David Moore and redshirt freshman Chris Winter. Kent was an honorable mention selection in ’05, as was Moore in 2004 and ‘05.
The Men of Oregon continued a string of recent success that included a league-high and school-best five first-team selections in 2003 and ‘04, four first-team honors in 2002 and ‘05, and three more in 2001. Since the award’s debut in 1991, the Ducks had claimed four or more honorees once before their recent run (4, 1996), and three honors in 1991, ‘92, ’94 and ’97.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
