Golfers Travel to Hawaii

EUGENE, Ore. ? Coming off a respectable ninth-place showing at last week’s Ping Arizona Intercollegiate, the Oregon men’s golf team looks for another successful tournament at this week’s UH Hilo Invitational. The event will be played Wednesday through Friday at the par-72, 6,791-yard Waikoloa Village Golf Club in Waikoloa, Hawaii.
Junior Derek Sipe leads the Ducks into contention. He tied for fifth at the Ping Arizona, his second-best finish as a Duck. Also competing for Oregon will be senior Matt Ma, who is from Aiea, Hawaii, as well as juniors Joey Benedetti and Zeke Reyna and freshman Marcus Sostak.
The 18-team field includes two-time defending tournament champion Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets come into the event ranked 20th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin poll. Other top-25 squads in the field include No. 2 Stanford, No. 3 Oklahoma State, No. 8 USC and No. 25 Arizona State. The remainder of the teams include Colorado, UC Davis, Hawaii, Hawaii-Hilo, Kansas, Oklahoma, Oregon, Oregon State, Pacific, Santa Clara, Texas Christian, Texas Tech and Washington.
The Ducks finished 18th at last year’s UH Hilo Invitational. Benedetti was Oregon’s highest individual finisher, tying for 39th at 218 (71-77-70).
