Ducks Drop Final Home Dual to Beavers, 35-7
EUGENE -- Senior Justin Pearch, wrestling in his final match as a Duck, was one of only two Ducks to gain victories over the No. 18 Oregon State Beavers as the Ducks fell 35-7 in a Pac-10 dual match at McArthur Court.
The senior from Oregon City, Ore., wrestling at 141 lbs. in front of the home crowd, picked up the major decision against Clifton Ivanoff 20-7. Ivanoff was wrestling in his first match match as a collegian.
"Justin wrestled well tonight against a guy we really knew nothing about," head coach Chuck Kearney said. "I seem to say it every week, but it's true, we are a young team and we are getting better. Hopefully we can get a good couple weeks of practice in before the Pac-10 tournament and come out and wrestle strong there."
Ryan Dunn was the other Duck to pick up a victory as he once again opened the night with a victory. The staple at 125 lbs., Dunn picked up the win over Jake Gonzalez 7-2, giving the Ducks a 3-0 lead.
The Beavers would get a major decision victory at 133 lbs. before Pearch came up with the win at 141 lbs to give the Ducks a 7-4 lead. That was the last match that the Ducks would gain points in, as they dropped the last seven matches, including a forfeit at 174 lbs.
Freshman Jake McCoy had the closest match of the night for the Ducks as he almost had Brett Arand pinned at the end of the second period, but was forced to take the nearfall at the end of the period. Arand then pulled the reversal 30 seconds into the third period and pinned McCoy 30 seconds later.
The Ducks head to Salem for their last dual match against Portland State on Feb. 14 before heading to the Pac-10 tournament the weekend of Feb. 24-25.
