Duck Golfers Set for Pac-10 Champs in Seattle

EUGENE ? The No. 50-ranked University of Oregon women’s golf team will head north for the 21st annual Pac-10 Championships, set for Monday-Wednesday, April 23-25 at the Broadmoor Golf Course in Seattle, Wash. Teams tee off on the par 72, 6,196-yard course each morning and will play 18 holes each day.

IN THE POLLS
Based on this week’s Golfweek ratings, No. 50 Oregon is one of seven league teams ranked top-50 nationally along with No. 1 Arizona State, No. 6 USC, No. 8 Stanford, No. 11 UCLA, No. 15 Arizona, No. 45 Washington State. Other teams in the 10-team field include No. 55 California, No. 59 Oregon State and No. 60 Washington.
Eight Pac-10 women’s individuals rank top-25 overall in the country ? Anna Nordqvist (second, 70.45), Jennifer Osborn (fifth, 70.91), Azahara Munoz (11th, 71.66) of Arizona State, Alison Walshe of Arizona (ninth, 71.65), Paola Moreno of USC (15th, 71.85), Lauren Todd of Stanford (19th, 72.08) and Tiffany Joh (23rd, 72.45) and Hannah Jun (25th, 72.47) of UCLA.
DUCK PAC-10 CREDENTIALS
This year’s Duck roster, led by a pair of former All-Pac-10 honorable mention picks ? senior Kim McCready and sophomore Cathryn Bristow - has combined for eight prior Pac-10 appearances, courtesy of seniors McCready (2004, 21st-tie, 235; 2005, 37th-tie, 234) and Therese Wenslow (2003, 36th-tie, 236; 2004, 48th, 251; 2006, 48th, 248), junior Victoria Wenslow (2005, 31st-tie, 232; 2006, 43rd, 240) and Bristow (2006, 40th, 239).
UO TEAM NOTES
So far this year, McCready owns the best season average of the team (74.5), followed by Bristow (76.4), freshmen Felicia Eastick (77.6) and Kate Hildahl (79.2), Therese Wenslow (79.6) and Victoria Wenslow (79.6).
McCready has posted the team’s lone victory of the season in the Baja Classic in early February (70-75-147), and has two other top-10 finishes among her six overall appearances. Bristow has two top-10 finishes this spring, and Victoria Wenslow also has one this spring. Eastick has proven herself as the top newcomer so far with three top-15 finishes among her five spring events.
In her 16 rounds of play in 2006-07, McCready also paces the Ducks with four rounds under-par this year, including a school record four-under (67) in the Stanford Intercollegiate final round, and three more rounds at par.

LAST TIME OUT
Team-wise in their last stop this season two weeks ago, the then-No. 54 Duck women climbed six places into fourth place overall in the final round of the Indiana Invitational, held at Crooked Stick Golf Course, Tuesday, April 9.
The Ducks carded a final round 296 ? the second-lowest score of the round and tourney ? to finish with a final combined score of 610 after they shot an opening round 314. UO's 296 was its lowest score of the spring slate and second-lowest including the fall after its combined for a second-round 295 in the Stanford Intercollegiate last October on the par-71 Stanford Golf Course.
Individually in the Indiana University-hosted event, Duck sophomore Cathryn Bristow and senior Kim McCready both shot final round scores of 70 to finish in ties for fourth (78-70-148) and sixth places (80-70-150), respectively ? UO’s fifth and sixth top-10 finishes of the season.
Freshman Felicia Eastick followed in a tie for 13th place (75-77-152) ? her second top-15 finish in as many tournaments ? and UO’s final scorer was junior Victoria Wenslow (60th, 71-70-161). UO freshman Kate Hildahl also played and tied for 73rd overall (85-79-164).
McCREADY BACK ON TRACK
McCready’s appearance was her first in nearly two months after she missed the previous two tournaments with a wrist injury. The Placerville, Calif., native also shot a two-under 70 in the first round of the Baja Classic that she won in early February (70-75-145), while last fall, she posted a school record four-under (67) in the Stanford Intercollegiate final round. Altogether during the fall and spring season, the former All-Pac-10 honorable mention selection has led UO in nine of her 16 rounds of duty.
OREGON PAC-10 HISTORY
UO’s highest finish in the league finale came in 1991 and 1993 when it tied for fourth in the events held in Eugene and Walla Walla, Wash., respectively. In that same time period, the Ducks added fifth-place finishes in 1992, ’94, ’95 and ’97 to go along with a sixth-place finish in ’96.
PAC-10 FLASHBACK ? 2006
Last year, then-senior Erin Andrews paced the then-No. 43 Oregon women’s golf team in all three rounds at Oro Valley Country Club in Tucson, Ariz.
The Las Vegas native posted her low round, a 2-over 74, in the finale at the University of Arizona-hosted tourney, for her highest Pac-10 finish (15th-tie, 76-76-74). In other Pac-10 trips, she finished 28th (231) in ’05, 40th in ’03 (238) and 43rd in ’04 (246).
Other Duck players included Bristow (40th, 81-83-75-239), Victoria Wenslow (43rd, 76-82-8-2413), then-senior Michelle Timpani (44th, 81-80-81-242) and Therese Wenslow (48th, 85-81-82-248).
In the ’06 team standings, No. 2 UCLA survived a 301 final round to win by one stroke (879, 291-287-301) over No. 3 Arizona State who posted the top final round of the field (880, 287-299-294). No. 6 USC climbed one spot the final day to place third (891, 293-302-296), five strokes ahead of No. 12 California (fourth, 896, 296-298-302).
Other team finishers included No. 19 Arizona (fifth, 907, 301-308-298), No. 27 Washington (sixth, 910, 308-300-302), No. 21 Stanford (seventh, 912, 299-311-302), No. 49 Oregon State (eighth, 920, 307-298-315), No. 42 Washington State (ninth, 928, 300-315-313) and No. 43 Oregon (10th, 945, 314-319-312).
In the individual race, Washington’s Paige Mackenzie improved one spot the final day to win by four strokes with a 5-under 211 (71-71-69), and her 69 score Wednesday was the lowest final round by two strokes. Arizona State’s Alissa Kuczka followed in second place (215, 71-73-71) after she entered the day in sixth place. UCLA’s Tiffany Joh and California’s Sophia Sheridan tied for third place at 216, and USC’s Irene Cho followed in fifth place (219, 71-76-72).
HEAD COACH PROFILE
Oregon head coach Shannon Rouillard is in her seventh season at the helm and guided Oregon to 11th place in the 2000 NCAA Championships, and top-12 West Regional finishes in 2001 (ninth), ?04 (eighth-tie) and ’05 (10th). As a Duck player, she was a 1995 Pac-10 honorable mention all-conference honoree for UO and in 1993 took seventh and 29th in the Pac-10 and NCAA Championships, respectively. After her collegiate career, she was a 1999 Women's U.S. Open qualifier after she claimed medalist honors in the Lake Merced (Calif.) qualifying tournament.
Earlier in the fall, Rouillard also made an appearance as a player in the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur qualifier, held at Indian Summer Golf and Country Club in Olympia, Wash. The seventh-year Duck coach shot an 82, and won a playoff to finish fourth overall, and is the first alternate for the national championship, set for next week at the Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss., Sat.-Thu., Oct. 21-26.
FURTHER ON UP THE ROAD
After this weekend, BYU, LSU and Michigan will host NCAA Regional events on Thursday-Saturday, May 10-12. The NCAA Championships follow Tuesday-Friday, May 22-25 in Daytona Beach at LPGA International.
