FEATURED RACE/MEET NOTES
W 1,500m ? In the top section, the Oregon Track Club Elite’s Nicole Teeter took the lead with less than 150m to go and won comfortably (4:14.83) over former NCAA 5,000m champion and New Balance post-collegian Megan Metcalfe (second, 4:16.28) who led much of the second half off the race after the pacer dropped out after a 2:17.5 opening 800m. Teeter just missed the meet record (4:13.22, Johanna Nilsson, N. Arizona, 2003), met the 2007 USA Championships A qualifying standard (4:16.50) and the 2008 Olympic Trials B standard (4:19.50), and was not far off the Olympic Trials A mark (4:10.00).
W 5,000m ? Kara Goucher ran away solo the last two laps en route to the win (15:16.86) in her outdoor 5,000m season debut ? less than nine seconds off her personal best from Europe last summer (15:08.13) that ranked her second in the U.S. in ’06. Nike’s Lauren Fleshman, a new Eugene resident, ran together with Goucher until the 11th lap of the 12 1/2 lap race when the duo were running mid-73 second splits on average and on pace for 15:25. Goucher pulled away in the final two laps and apparently extended her 15m lap at the bell in the final 400m as Fleshman followed second across the line in 15:25.92. Early on, pacer Amber McGown of the OTC Elite ran 73-second laps for nearly all the first 1/3 (4:50 1,600m), then Megan Metcalfe led another 73-second lap before stepping off on the fifth lap. Goucher and Fleshman ran together for the next five laps out front. Both ultimately met the 2007 USA Championships A standard (15:50.00) and Goucher also made the World Championships B standard (15:24.00), while Fleshman was less than two seconds shy but still had a season best after she debuted outdoors in ’07 at 15:27.61 in Australia on March 2. Goucher’s time also broke the meet record (15:23.03) set by former Oregon NCAA champion Kathy Hayes in 1985.
W Javelin - Danish thrower Christina Scherwin took the lead on her first attempt (54.68m (180-6)), and threw farther on all five of her remaining throws, including 56.89m (187-9), 55.81m (184-2) in the prelims, and 55.13m (182-0), 56.69m (187-1) and 56.85m (187-7) in the final. Collegiate leader and Duck sophomore Rachel Yurkovich posted two throws past 170 feet - her second attempt (51.81m (171-1)) and last attempt (52.55m (173-6)) for her fifth straight meet in '07 with marks of 169-11 or better. Fellow Duck sophomore Ashley McCrea enjoyed her second best mark ever on her first toss (166-3) that earned her third place Friday, and had another toss (159-4) on her second try that was better than her preseason best (158-6). Former Duck and 2005 NCAA runner-up Sarah Malone continued her return from injuries that slowed her in '06, and finished fourth overall with her best throw on her first attempt (160-4). She added three throws in the finals of 154-9 or better - 46.85m (154-9), 47.95m (158-5) and 47.21m (156-0). Scherwin's daily best on her second toss (187-9) broke the meet record of Malone (174-5) from 2004.
M 1,500m ? Colorado senior Stephen Pifer may have been one of the younger faces in the post-collegiate heavy race, but he looked the most savvy and comfortable biding his time behind OTC Elite’s pacer Courtney Jaworski who took the field through lap splits of 59.5, 2:00.3 and 2:44 at the bell. Pifer ended the race with a 58.4-second split to win (3:41.77). In his wake, the crowd went crazy and helped inspire Duck freshman A.J. Acosta the last 200m to take second place (3:42.40), while fellow frosh Craig Miller of Wisconsin also had a strong finish (third, 3:42.67). Nine of the 10 finishers met the USA B standard (3:45.00), and Pifer was .57 seconds off the USA standard (3:41.20), and met the Olympic Trials B standard (3:43.00) with Acosta, Miller and the OTC Elite’s Nick Symmonds (fourth, 3:42.89). The latter new Eugenean made his outdoor season debut after winning the USA indoor 800m title in late February in Boston. Pifer’s mark (3:41.77) was only 1.01 seconds shy of the meet record held by Dub Myers (3:40.76) from 1986 ? the same year he won the NCAA 1,500m title.
Bill McChesney, Jr. Memorial Twilight M 5,000m ? The race commemorating Oregon’s school record holder in the 5,000m and 10,000m (13:14.80, 1982; 27:50.82, 1982) pitted two of America’s next distance hopes in a title bout that did not disappoint. Duck teammates Michael McGrath and Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott took the field through opening laps of 63, 67, 65 and 65 seconds for a 4:20 first 1,600m, and five meters ahead of the post-collegiate heavy field. Kiptoo-Biwott added 64, 65 and 67-second fifth, sixth and seventh laps, then let Madison transplant Jonathon Riley of Nike lead the eighth and ninth laps (67, 68). Sensing the pace sagging, Rupp moved to the lead with ’04 Olympian Bolota Asmerom and the duo ran a 67-second 400m the 10th lap. Rupp then challenged the field with a 63-second lap on the 11th go-around with Solinsky close by and ready to take the lead on the backstretch ? apparently poised for another of his long hard drives home, while New Zealand two-time Olympian Michael Aish five meters back of the duo. The bell rang with 12:28 on the scoreboard as Solinsky seemed to begin to inch away from Rupp, but both giving notable efforts on the backstretch. Rupp responded with a burst of his own in the final 150m-200m with Solinsky still pushing, but not with as much ease anymore. On the homestretch, the crowd’s roar energized Rupp while Solinsky continued to lumber home. An ill-fated glance back with 15m-20m left shocked the two-time NCAA 5,000m champion Solinsky, and he immediately tried to shift gears again his last few strides and lunged the final five meters home while Rupp strided by. Rupp’s time (13:30.49) rewrote his prior overall personal best (13:37.91) from his post-prep summer European jaunt in 2004, and also moved him to sixth all-time for UO ? his first appearance in the Duck top-10 with a prior collegiate outdoor best of 13:44.72 from a meet in Van Heusden, Belgium in 2005. Rupp (13:30.49), and Solinsky (second, 13:30.54) met the Olympic Trials A standard (13:33.00), were approximately a half-second shy of the USA Championships A standard (13:30.00) and were less than three seconds shy of the World Championships B and Olympic B marks (13:28.00). Asmerom held on for third place (13:34.23), just ahead of Aish (fourth, 13:34.42) and Terukazu Omoroi (fourth, 13:34.44) as the top eight finishers all broke 13:45.00. The meet record (13:25.81) was set last year by Nike’s Dathan Ritzenhein, the same race in which Solinsky ran 13:27.94 which was the fastest 5,000m by a collegian on U.S. soil in ?06
ATHLETE QUOTES
Kara Goucher, Nike, Women’s 5,000m, 1st Place, 15:16.86
“I really wanted to get the Olympic standard for the 5K and feel good going to Stanford, where my next race is. With one mile to go I knew I was off to a good start, but for most of the race I wasn’t feeling that pop to really go after it. The 10K will be my event. My training has been geared towards that and in my head I’m been mostly visualizing the 10K.”
Chris Solinsky, Wisconsin, Sr., Men’s 5,000m, 2nd Place, 13:30.54
“I just didn’t feel that the pace was there from the beginning, and I was told under strict orders not to take the lead until the last mile. I don’t think things really went as planned but it’s the first run of the year so it wasn’t too bad. (At the end) I started to hear the crowd get into it and then I did the ultimate ?no no’ and turned by head back. After that I felt my body tighten up a little bit and basically kind of flung myself across the finish line.”
Galen Rupp, Oregon, Sr., Men’s 5,000m, 1st Place, 13:30.49
“I had a lot of doubts about today in my mind, I knew they were going to be there but I just try my best to keep fighting through them. My main focus is just on myself during the race, and it was a good race. Solinsky's proven himself a great competitor, so I'm fortunate to come away with the win.”
“The fans here are really amazing, I pretty much owe this to them, they’re the ones that really pull me through this. Today I wanted to focus on competing and let the time take care of itself. Now I just look forward to more opportunities in the future.”
“It’s been a long time since I’ve had a good solid race like this. Last year I was sick all the time and dealing with health issues, but I knew eventually I’d make it back I just had to work hard.”
Ryan Brandel, Oregon, Sr., Men’s Javelin, 1st Place, 226-11
“I felt pretty good tonight, but I normally do when I get a chance to throw under the lights ? I just love this atmosphere. Because of that, I probably pressed a little early and tried to use my arm too much. Once I relaxed and cleaned up my technique and used more of my whole body, I was better.”
“This year I’ve approached each meet with better composure and have been able to concentrate on each individual throw better. A lot of it goes back to our off-season training, too ? I’m in better condition this year.”
