Barnes, Leiter and Gail Receive Pac-10 All-Academic Honors

Walnut Creek, Calif. --- Oregon seniors Suzie Barnes and Kristi Leiter were named to the Pacific-10 Conference Softball All-Academic first team it was announced today by Commissioner Tom Hansen. To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
For Leiter, it is the third time she has been selected as a Pac-10 All-Academic first team honoree. The accounting major maintains a 3.58 gpa and is on pace to graduate this June. Earlier this year, the Lake Stevens, Wash., native was also named to the ESPN the Magazine All-Academic District VIII team.
This was the second time in her collegiate career Barnes has been named to the Pac-10’s All-Academic team. A year ago the educational studies major was named to the second team. The Lake Forest Park, Wash., native maintains a 3.43 gpa, and like Leiter, was named to the ESPN the Magazine All-Academic District VIII team earlier this year.
Barnes was also named to the Pac-10 second team earlier this month after leading Oregon and breaking single-season records for runs scored (64) and stolen bases (41).
Junior Joanna Gail was named to the Pac-10 All-Academic second team. The Ducks’ starting third baseman is a journalism major with a 3.26 gpa. It is the first academic honor for the Poway, Calif., native.
Senior Ann Marie Topps and sophomore Melissa Rice were named honorable mention.
It is the sixth consecutive year Oregon has had at least one player named to the Pac-10 All-Academic first team.
Oregon recently completed the 2007 season with its fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament in the last five years. The Ducks posted a 44-19 record, the most wins for the program since 1989.
