25 Ducks Land Pac-10 Track & Field All-Academic Honors
WALNUT CREEK, Calif., -- The Pacific-10 Conference announced that 25 University of Oregon men’s and women’s track and field student-athletes (12M, 13W) were selected to its annual all-academic teams, according to Commissioner Tom Hansen.
The ?Men of Oregon’ tied for second-most among first-team honorees (4) behind Stanford (5) and featured two more second-team selections and six honorable mention picks. The Duck women also received three second-team honors and 10 more honorable mention choices.
On the men’s side, first-team selections included juniors Michael McGrath and Galen Rupp and sophomores Andrew Greif and Scott Wall, and second-team choices included senior Ryan Brandel and sophomore Steven Johnson.
Men’s honorable mention choices included redshirt senior David Moore, sophomores Jared Huske, Jack Jensen, A.J. O’Connell, Jon Thomas and Chris Winter.
Among repeat winners, McGrath and Rupp were first-team selections in ’06, and Moore scored his fourth honorable mention award. Four of the aforementioned selections were similarly honored in cross country last fall - Rupp and Wall (first team), McGrath (second team) and Winter (honorable mention) ? and McGrath and Winter were second-team and honorable mention choices in ’05, respectively.
In other prior related academic honors, Rupp was an ESPN Magazine All-Academic First Team national choice in 2006 and is nominated again in ’07.
On the women’s side, three Duck women were chosen to the 2007 Pac-10 All-Academic Second Team - senior Emily Enders and sophomores Zoe Nelson and Leah Worthen.
UO’s 10 women’s honorable mentions included redshirt senior Britney Henry, juniors Ashley Bridenbeck, Kasey Harwood, Amanda Santana and Irie Searcy and sophomores Lucy Cridland, Megan Maloney, Ashley McCrea, Kalindra McFadden and Rachel Yurkovich.
Enders and Searcy claimed similar honorable mention recognition in 2005 and ’06, and Bridenbeck, Harwood and Santana added honorable mention status last track and field season. Nelson received honorable mention laurels last fall in cross country.
Four of the men’s honorees also shined recently on the track as NCAA Championships participants ? Brandel (javelin - All-American), Huske (4x100m), McGrath (1,500m) and Rupp (10,000m ? All-American). Brandel (javelin) and Rupp (5,000m / 10,000m) were Pac-10 event champions a month ago, and Wall (10,000m) and Winter (steeplechase) added top-eight finishes for the Ducks who won their third Pac-10 title in five years.
Two-time All-American Yurkovich and McCrea also competed in the NCAA Championships javelin last week, and were Pac-10 scorers a month ago with their first- and third-place finishes, as was Cridland (discus), Enders (pole vault), Nelson (5,000m / 10,000m), McFadden (heptathlon), Searcy (4x400m) and Worthen (4x100m, 4x400m).
The Men of Oregon continued a string of recent league academic success that included a league-high and school-best five first-team selections in 2003 and ?04, four first-team honors in 2002, ’05, ’06 and ?07, and three more in 2001. Since the award’s debut in 1991, the Ducks have claimed four or more honorees once before their recent run (4, 1996), and three honors in 1991, ?92, ’94 and ’97.
Historically on the women’s side, the Duck women have claimed three or more first-team honorees 10 times since 1991, including a school record five on five occasions (1991, ’93, ’95, ’98, ’03)
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and have been either a starter or significant contributor outdoors in ’07.
