Brandel, Rupp & Yurkovich Picked to District All-Academic Squad
EUGENE ? Three of the University of Oregon’s most decorated track and field athletes were also honored for their academic accomplishments Monday to ESPN Magazine District 8 All-Academic Team ? senior Ryan Brandel, junior Galen Rupp and sophomore Rachel Yurkovich.
Rupp was tabbed to the academic honor’s first team and owned a 3.93 GPA in business, and Brandel (3.34, digital arts and design) and Yurkovich (3.24, business) were second-team choices.
Honorees were selected by members of The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), and nominees must be at least a redshirt freshman or older, be at his/her institution for at least a full academic year, a starter or important reserve, and hold at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale).
On the track this spring, all three shined athletically as Pac-10 event champions and All-Americans.
Rupp scored his second NCAA Championships runner-up finish in the 10,000m (28:56.19) to cap a record-breaking junior season that included an American collegiate 10,000m record (27:33.42) in late April. In May, he followed with wins in both the Pac-10 5,000m and 10,000m, and a regional 5,000m win two weekends later in Eugene. Last fall, he also received All-America honors after he placed sixth in the NCAA Cross Country Championships, three weeks after he kicked to Oregon’s 10th conference harrier title
Two weeks ago, Brandel placed seventh in his NCAA Championships javelin debut (225-11 (68.85m)) and claimed UO’s 24th All-America honor in the event. During the season, he ranked fifth nationally among collegians with his personal best (238-0) that far outdistanced his preseason best of 214-3 and put him third all-time in UO history behind a pair of former NCAA champions. Earlier in May, he staked UO’s ninth Pac-10 javelin title with his mark of 235-4, and added second place in the West Regional two weeks later (218-3).
Yurkovich posted her second straight All-America javelin honor in the NCAA Championships (fifth, 170-0 (51.83m)) and raised Oregon’s streak of All-America honors in the event to seven straight years and its ninth honor overall in that span. Earlier in the season, she broke the Pac-10 record in late April (189-11) with a mark that moved her to fourth all-time among collegians and Americans. During the championship slate, she added her second Pac-10 and West Regional titles (174-11 / 178-9) in May.
More information on the award is available at the www.CoSIDA.org website at the http://cosida.com/allamerica/default.asp URL address.
The trio were also among 25 Ducks honored two weeks ago by the Pacific-10 Conference on its recent all-academic teams. Rupp claimed first-team honors, Brandel was a second-team selection, and Yurkovich was an honorable mention.
All three are slated to compete this week in the USA Outdoor Championships in Indianapolis, Wed.-Sun., June 20-24. More event information is located at USA Track and Field’s www.usatf.org website.
