Skipper Takes Seventh in USA Champs
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. ? University of Oregon senior Tommy Skipper placed seventh in the pole vault in third day action in the AT&T USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on the IUPUI campus.
The Sandy, Ore., native cleared a final height of 18-4 1/2 (5.60m) - his second highest clearance this season - in his third straight USA Outdoor Championships appearance. He made third attempt clearances Friday at 17-8 1/2 (5.40m), 18-0 1/2 (5.50m) and 18-2 1/2 (5.60m), then missed his three tries at 18-8 1/4 (5.70m).
Overall in the event, Brad Walker of Nike won (18-8 1/4) on fewer misses over American record holder Jeff Hartwig of Nike (second, 18-8 1/4) and Jacob Pauli of Nike (third, 18-8 1/4).
Skipper capped his collegiate career two weeks ago with his fifth NCAA track title ? a UO record for individual collegiate track championships ? after he cleared 18-0 1/2 in his seventh NCAA appearance. Earlier in the postseason, he won his third Pac-10 conference title (17-10 1/2) in his outdoor season debut, then broke his own Pac-10 record in the NCAA West Regional (19-0 1/4) ? a mark that ranks him second in the U.S. this season.
On the field, graduate Brian Richotte fouled his three attempts in the hammer and did not place in the event.
Richotte capped his one-year career for the Ducks ranked fifth all-time with his personal best from his Pac-10 Championships victory (222-11). Two weeks later in late May, he followed with a win in the West Regional (221-6), then added 13th in the NCAA Championships.
Overall in the event Friday, A.G. Kruger of Nike won by almost 10 feet (256-3) over Kibwe Johnson of New York Athletic Club (second, 246-5) and Thomas Freeman of the New York Athletic Club (third, 244-1).
In junior championships event action Friday in Indianapolis, freshman A.J. Acosta led the 1,500m prelims and won the first heat (3:50.52) and advanced to Saturday’s event final. Fellow Duck freshman Matt Dettman took sixth in the same heat (3:52.98) and also advanced to the final. Prep senior and Duck signee Matt Centrowitz (3:56.46) also advanced and took third in the second of two heats (3:56.46) behind unattached entrant Mark Amirault (3:55.61).
Acosta led the Ducks in the 1,500m this season (3:42.40) and was an NCAA qualifier and Pac-10 scorer (fifth) in the event this past month. Indoors, he was the faster collegiate freshman miler in ’07 (4:00.37) and UO’s third fastest ever overall, and he was an All-American in the NCAA Indoor Championships mile (13th).

Looking ahead to Saturday's fourth day action, Ducks are tentatively slated to compete in one junior men's event, the 1,500m, and one senior women's event, the women's hammer (Britney Henry).
