Acosta & Klotz Win U.S. Junior Titles
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. ? UO freshmen A.J. Acosta and Kenny Klotz claimed junior titles Saturday title in fourth day action Saturday in the Foot Locker USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on the IUPUI campus.
The Oceanside, Calif., native Acosta won the junior 1,500m by .01 seconds (3:49.53) over Duck signee and incoming UO freshman Mathew Centrowitz of Arnold, Md. (second, 3:49.54), and Samuel Borchers of the Miami Valley Track Club (third, 3:50.23).
Unattached Duck entrant and Duck redshirt Matthew Dettman followed in 11th place (3:57.16).
Acosta had led the event 1,500m prelims Friday and won the first heat (3:50.52) while Dettman added sixth in the same heat (3:52.98).
Last year, Acosta, also won the U.S junior title (3:45.95) and later competed last August in the World Junior Championships (18th, 3:50.11).
This season, Acosta led the Ducks in the 1,500m (3:42.40) and was an NCAA qualifier and Pac-10 scorer (fifth) in the event this past month. Indoors, he was the faster collegiate freshman miler in ’07 (4:00.37) and UO’s third fastest ever overall, and he was an All-American in the NCAA Indoor Championships mile (13th).
Klotz won the 10,000m (30:51.75) barely 24 hours after he took runner-up honors in the 5,000m Thursday. Kevin Schwab followed in second place (30:56.75), followed by Matthew Llano (third, 31:19.03). Oregon redshirt Isaac Stoutenburgh claimed seventh (32:01.98) and scored his best finish in the national junior event after he placed 13th in '06.
This outdoor season, Klotz led UO freshmen in the 5,000m (14:07.79) and 10,000m (29:50.26), and was a Pac-10 scorer in the 10,000m (eighth) and West Regional qualifier. He opened the meet Thursday with a runner-up finish in the 5,000m (14:37.42) behind Elliot Heath (14:36.32).
On the senior side Saturday, redshirt senior Britney Henry took eighth in the women’s hammer in senior event action in the AT&T USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The Spokane, Wash., native enjoyed her best-ever USA Championships finish (217-5 (66.27m)) and was the second-best collegiate finisher in the field behind event winner Brittany Riley of Southern Illinois (first, 237-7, 72.41m).
Overall in the event Saturday, Kristal Yush followed in second place (223-11), ahead of Jessica Cosby (third, 223-90 and Erin Gilreath of the New York Athletic Club (fourth, 223-4).
This season, Henry enjoyed the finest season ever by a Duck hammer thrower ? one that included UO’s first-ever Pac-10 championship (217-10) and top-six finishes in the NCAA West Regional (third, 215-3) and NCAA Championships (fifth, 214-9). During the regular season, she also exactly matched her school record in the Oregon Twilight to open May (221-7 (67.54m)).
