Rupp Kicks to Runner-Up NCAA 10K Finish

SACRAMENTO, Calif. ? University of Oregon junior Galen Rupp paced Duck second-day action with a stirring runner-up finish in the 10,000m Wednesday night in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Sacramento State University at Hornet Stadium.
The Portland, Ore., native bided his time two runners deep in a crowded front pack for the first 22 laps. After a 14:45 first 5K split, the moderately-paced race continued to feature at least 15 runners within 1-2 second’s contact of the leader.
Rupp pushed ahead to the lead in the final three laps with Liberty’s Josh McDougal and Shadrack Songok of Texas A&M Corpus Christi giving chase close behind. Rupp led until the final 150 meters when the early race leader Songok outsprinted him to the line to win (28:55.83) by only .36 seconds.
Rupp followed in second place just behind (28:56.19), and matched UO’s best-ever NCAA event finish that he also recorded in ’05, as did former Duck Mark McMonigal in 1986.
“Coming in I knew it wouldn’t be easy, and I followed my race plan exactly and gave it all I had,” Rupp said. “I tried to stay as relaxed as possible and on the inside till 1200m to go. You have to respect everybody in the field, and I give him credit (Songok) ? he finished strong and also led a majority of the race so he did his share. I try not to get too up with the wins, so I have to have the same attitude about today or I’m in it for the wrong reasons. The same thing happened in the Oregon Invitational in April and in that race I was able to barely win a close one at the line against a great competitor in Chris Solinsky. This race is a reminder that there are a lot of great runners out that, which will be the case again in two weeks at the USA Championships.”
Rupp capped a record-breaking junior season that included an American collegiate 10,000m record (27:33.42) in late April, that was followed by wins in both the Pac-10 5,000m and 10,000m, and a regional 5,000m win two weekends ago in Eugene.
Rupp’s All-America honor was his seventh on the track for the Ducks after he claimed indoor accolades in the 3,000m and 5,000m in 2006 (sixth / fifth) and ’07 (fourth / third). The Portland, Ore., native also claimed similar honors last fall after his fifth-place NCAA finish that came a month after he won the Pac-10 Cross Country Championships.
Also in the 10,000m, Duck redshirt sophomore Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott ran the whole race in the top 10 and ended in ninth place (29:13.43) in his NCAA debut.
Kiptoo-Biwott entered the meet seeded 23rd nationally based on his personal best (29:00.32) from the Stanford Invitational that was less than three seconds from UO’s all-time top 10 list (10th is 28:57.79). The LaCueva High School (Albuquerque) product opened the championship season the month before with points in the 5,000m and 10,000m (seventh / third).
Earlier in the afternoon in the 1,500m prelims, redshirt junior Michael McGrath and freshman A.J. Acosta finished eighth and ninth in the first heat and stood 18th and 20th overall in the 27-runner field with times of 3:46.18 and 3:46.83, respectively.
In their NCAA outdoor debuts, Acosta and McGrath entered the meet seeded 15th and 26th based on their season bests (3:42.40 / 3:44.25) from the Oregon Invitational and Oregon Preview, respectively, and Acosta’s time was the second-fastest by a freshman this season. In the recent Pac-10 Championships, the duo finished fourth and fifth, respectively, while in the regional they placed fifth and ninth, respectively.
In the sprints, the men’s 4x400m relay made their fifth straight NCAA outdoor appearance and finished fifth in their heat and 14th overall in a 1.50-second season best (3:07.24) that ranks them 14th in school history. The Duck relay consisted entirely of newcomers ? juniors Phil Alexander and Marcus Dillon and freshmen Chad Barlow and Ashton Eaton ? and featured an impressive 45.6-second anchor split by Dillon.
"When you get the stick and you're behind a ways, you have to sell out and get after it the first 50 meters," Dillon said. "You have to put yourself in the mix because you know you'll have adrenaline for a while to help push you through, and I didn't want to have anything left at the end. I made a hard push with 250m on the curve which I normally wouldn't do but I had to do something and I didn't have anything left at the end. Coach’s split gives me confidence that I can be in the mix in the 400m semifinals tomorrow. It's been exciting to be here for the first time, to be running against the nation's top teams. It validates all the training that I've done this year - to be able to run with them."
Dillon had saw action the day before on Wednesday in the 400m prelims (ninth, 46.68) and advanced to Friday’s seminfinal. He also ran in the 4x100m prelims Wednesday (14th, 40.77) ? two places higher than their pre-meet seeding.
On the women’s side, UO saw freshman Keara Sammons make the Duck women’s first appearance of the meet in an event final and finished 12th (34:01.09). The Centennial, Colo., native ran most of the race in a 5-10 woman pack battling for sixth place that broke up in the final two miles.
Sammons earned her invitation to the collegiate finale thanks to her impressive event debut in late March in the Stanford Invitational (33:54.55) and her time ranked her sixth in UO history and 15th in Thursday’s pre-meet seedings. The Centennial, Colo., native opened the championship slate with a scoring effort in the Pac-10 5,000m (eighth) and her event season best came in early April’s Pepsi Team Invitational (16:42.78).
Overall in Thurdsay’s event final, Texas Tech Sally Kipyego won (32:55.71) by more than five seconds over Georgetown sophomore Melissa Grelli (second, 33:01.56) and Providence senior Aine Hoban (third, 33:04.32).
In preliminary action, All-America sophomore Rachel Yurkovich advanced to Saturday’s javelin final and took only the first of her three throws, and her mark of 162-8 ranked her fifth in the 27-woman field.
Sophomore teammate Ashley McCrea followed in 21st place (143-4) in her NCAA debut. The North Bend, Ore., native McCrea opened with a throws of 136-3 (41.53m) and 137-6 (41.93m), then threw her daily best on her last attempt.
Yurkovich entered the competition as the top seed thanks to her Pac-10 record from late April (189-11) that also ranks her top 10 all-time among collegians (fourth) and Americans (fourth). In recent weeks, she added her second Pac-10 and West Regional titles (174-11 / 178-9) and overall this season also topped her preseason best (179-10) in the Oregon Twilight (185-11).
McCrea earned her NCAA invitation thanks to a fifth-place West Regional finish (159-1), and also scored third in mid-May’s Pac-10 Championships. Early in the season, she threw an eight foot, two inch personal best in April to move to sixth all-time for Oregon, and also topped 165 feet in the Oregon Invitational (165-2) in mid-April.
On the track, sophomore Rebekah Noble ranked third in the first of two semifinal heats of the 800m (2:04.02) and advanced to Saturday’s final. Noble’s time was the seventh-fastest of Thursday’s 16 entrants as California junior Alysia Johnson led the field (2:02.73), ahead of Minnesota sophomore Heather Dorniden (second, 2:03.13) and Michigan senior Katie Erdman (second, 2:03.60).
The Spokane, Wash., native advanced to Thursday’s second round after she won her preliminary heat Wednesday afternoon (2:06.05).
Complete meet results are available at the www.FlashResults.com website at the http://www.flashresults.com/2007_Meets/outdoor/NCAADivisionI/index.htm URL address.
Looking ahead, the Ducks have four athletes competing in event finals Friday ? seniors Ryan Brandel (javelin), Tommy Skipper (javelin) and Britney Henry (hammer) and freshman Nicole Blood ? and Dillon in the 400m semifinal.
