Dunn Downs No. 1 Scott, but Grapplers fall 33-3 to Oklahoma State
Eugene, Ore?Ryan Dunn defeated Oklahoma State’s Coleman Scott, the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the nation at 133 lbs., in a dramatic 5-3 decision, but the Oregon team fell 33-3 to No. 3 Oklahoma State in their regular season finale Friday night at McArthur Court.
With the score tied 3-3 in the third period, Dunn scored a two point takedown on Scott with only three seconds remaining in the match to take the 5-3 decision.
“Ryan (Dunn) has been knocking on the door for a while, and he’s had opportunities to get a win like this, but it hasn’t happened,” Coach Chuck Kearney said. “Tonight, he beat one. If you beat a number one player in the country, you’re obviously one of the players in the national tournament.”
Dunn was the only Duck able to pick up a victory, although many Oregon grapplers came close. Two Cowboys, Brad Neitenbach at 141 lbs. and Kevin Wainscott at 165 lbs., won with 9-8 decisions, with the last point awarded for riding time advantage.
“We wrestled close against the best team in the country. I’m not a big believer in moral victories, but tonight was a moral victory,” said Kearney.
Oregon’s regular season concluded with tonight’s match, but McArthur Court will host the Pac-10 Championships on March 2-3.
