Ducks Post Solid Showing in MPSF Indoor Track Championships

SEATTLE ? University of Oregon sophomore Ashton Eaton came within six inches of matching the NCAA championships automatic qualifying standard in the long jump and freshman Melissa Gergel bettered her provisional qualifying mark in the pole vault to highlight the Ducks’ first day at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday at Washington’s Dempsey Indoor Facility.

Eaton, who already has earned a trip to the NCAA Indoor Championships March 14-15 in Fayetteville, Ark., with the nation’s second-best mark to date in the heptathlon, eclipsed his personal best by more than one foot on his second jump of the competition, finishing second with a jump of 25-3.25. The leap surpassed his previous indoor best of 24-3 from a year ago and landed him on the NCAA’s provisional qualifying list in his second different event.

In addition to falling shy of the automatic qualifying standard in the long jump of 25-9.25 he ran the lead leg on the school’s 4x400 relay two weeks ago that is less than three second off the automatic mark.

Gergel placed second in the pole vault with a mark of 13-7, bettering her previous best of 13-5.75 and inching closer to the NCAA automatic standard of 13-9.25.

Additional highlights included freshman Jamesha Youngblood bettering her NCAA provisional qualifying mark in finishing fifth in the women’s long jump with a best of 20-6.25, as well as Eugene senior Sarah Pearson and junior Zoe Nelson both surpassing provisional qualifying standards in the women’s 5,000, finishing third (16:34.73) and fourth (16:35.18), respectively.

Sophomore sprinter Derrick Jones advanced to Saturday’s finals in the 60 meters by winning his heat in the fourth-fast time of the evening of 6.81. Jared Huske and Eaton also advanced to the finals of the 60-meter hurdles, with Huske posting the fourth-fastest time among all qualifiers in 8:01.

Following the first day of competition, the Oregon women stood in third place after seven events in the team race with 31 points, while the men head into Saturday’s slate in fourth with 23 points after five events. Arizona State and Stanford distanced themselves from the rest of the women’s field with 78 and 64 points, respectively. The men’s team scores were much tighter as Washington took the lead with 31 points, followed by Arizona State (29), Washington State (25) and the Ducks.
